The world has now officialy gone mad.

He's not "selling" the remains, he's selling the ID of the original car. So that ID could be transferred (perhaps) to a stolen or written-off version of the same car.

Very common on Ebay, and they seem to have little desire to stop this fraudulent practice.

Seems to be getting to be a big thing selling ID's especially for the Fast Fords now due to the money they fetch
Our daughter went to Birmingham yesterday to see her other half's family, she has a 5 year old BMW X1.. when she got up this morning & both her front and rear number plates were missing!! So either they are going to do something quick and fast with her plates attached to another car or there will be another X1 about causing her no end of grief with tickets etc, or some poor un-suspected person is going to be buying a cloned car!!

But surely the problem is that selling those parts is not fraudulent. It only becomes fraudulent when someone buys the parts and attaches the VIN plate to another vehicle, doesn't it? Should it really be Ebay's job to stop people from selling things that might possibly later be used to commit fraud, but might not be?

Grant, that happened to me twice in France. With the rise of speed cameras, traffic lights cameras, etc etc, people are using plates for another vehicle to drive at their leisure with no fear of tickets, points on their license etc.

The first time this happened to me I had to visit 3 deferents police station to get my official complaint filed in. This was mandatory to avoid having a total of 6 points on my license. I finally managed to get a pic of "my" car speeding, it was a grey Peugeot 308 instead of my 911. and since everything is electronic, there was no humain brain to say "hmmm this is wrong"

Second time, they did stole the plates on the 911 and put it on their car to drive down to St Tropez for the holidays. They were caught for burglary, not paying petrol etc etc. Since I had filed a complaint at the police I was asked by the court if I wanted to ask for some money from these chiefs. I would have meant taking a lawyer (cost 1000€ at least) vs my cost of a new set of plates. I gave up

In France this has come to a point where administration has recently added a checkbox to say "this is not my car" on the speed infringement paper you receive at home

Herve. Thanks for that info. Having lived in France for 15 years, (Europe) I have continued to run UK Reg cars . It seems easier.,we have all relevant paperwork,but I will look out for this scam,and the tickbox as you noted. In my area,there are many Romanian reg vehicles,mostly over 10 years old,I wonder if they comply ? On a happier note....I was at Le Mans in 64/5 and remember the Triumph GT6 coupes doing well. I know this stealing number plates is a big problem, I have a friend with an Audi who had numerous parking tickets and also non payment of congestion charge even though he had not been to London for years. First of all he was worried his wife was using the car until he noticed he had the car at his work on one of the dates and then on another occasion they were in Italy on holiday.

He had not had any number plates stolen.

He asked for photos and when they were produced it was obvioulsy not his car, yes it was an Audi but a different model and colour to his.

He had to go into his local police station with his car and they have all been cancelled but it is worrying.

He has since sold the car.

Can't you just re-register the car, use a different registration?
Off topic:
I'm using two UK-registered cars in Sweden. Will soon be three.
I want to keep them UK-registered.
It's a big pain, having to return to the UK every 12 months for a new MOT.
I try to avoid being caught for speeding, but does anybody know the consequences of getting caught for speeding in other European countries with a UK-registered vehicle?
Incidentally, I'm insured with Stuart Collins, as I think they are the only insurer who give comprehensive insurance on UK-registered cars being used in other European countries for 12 months, at a time. (I think most only do it for 3 months at a time.)
Are there others who do this?

I guess you could Ade but.. she has her own sort of private plate.. not a private plate as we know them from the 60's but one we bought her from DVLA with a personal sort of touch.. so not really no
Can't help you on the speeding thing.. They like to pull up speeders and take a bit of cash off of you is what I found out in France.. and I think Chris R did too

Same as anywhere. The "Notice of Intended Prosecution" (or whatever a particular country call it) is sent to the registered address of the vehicle. Up to you if you decide not to pay the fine, but I would then advise against driving in that particular country again. So probably easier to pay the fine.

Orjust keep within the speed limit Adrian!!

I know of somebody who was sent a speeding fine from Italy, he had hired a car and they forwarded it on to him.

He decided not to pay it as it was only £80 and did not think they would pursue it.

He was correct other than a few letter that he put in the bin but if he gets pulled over by the police in Italy again I suspect it might cost him a lot more than the £80.

These days with computer records your name will be stored for a long time. It could ruin a nice holiday if they decide to lock you up.
