YOUR FAVORITE CHILDHOOD TOY

Post by Tim SP »

Folks, am loving the posts on 'guilty pleasure' obviously its clear I am nostalgia mad-
So, having spent more time that I should trying to find some of the treasured toys I had as a kid, well thought can't be the only sad git here (might be!) so thought it would be interesting for you to share such memories.

I'll kick off if ok.
On our weekly visit to nanny & Grandad in Greenwich, we passed a model shop in Welling- I hoped the light would be red as the shop was right on the junction- in the window was the new 1979 Scalextric set, but to me the little black car on its own, a Mk1 Rs1600 Escort with lights, I dont think I ever wanted something as much apart from my Grandads Hurricane (1:24 airfix) & the new for Christmas 1980 Embassy Siege action man-
I was welded to that shop window, in utter ore...........

Then all I got was a naffin hand carved escort shaped piece of coal- balls!! Kidding!!

Please share, I'm interested, I think many will be, we are all boys here at heart (and girls!)

I like to see Action Man with his feet up!
Gyroscopes.
Fascinated me.
Meccano.
Made a working model of a differential.
And many vehicles and cranes.
Model aeroplanes.
Glow-Plug, diesel, gliders, free flight, control-line stunt and combat, then R/C.
Happy Days.
Then I discovered girls and everything went downhill from there.
:(
Until I married a real Doll.

I loved my (mainly secondhand) Meccano. Never got as far as R/C models as the R/C gear was really expensive, but had fun with Jetex engines.

We recently sold our old Action Man stuff - which had been stashed in a loft for decades - and it made reasonably good money. But nothing like the Major Matt Mason set, which made over £200 for the four main figures + a few accessories! Surprising how collectible stuff like that is...

I was one of those kreepy kids who put everything back in its box after I'd finished playing so I've still got my collection of 50 cars or so in the loft. Now I know what I'm going to do at Christmas!
Vanwall, Cooper and BRM were my favourites. I saved up 49/6d for one of the most expensive models, a 1930s Bugatti, only take it back the following day because it wouldn't stay on the track - a design fault with the electric pick-up. This was before consumer rights and I thought I did quite well as a 13 year old to make my point and get a begrudging refund. How I wish I'd been tongue-tied as last time I looked they were selling at £2500 :|
Whatever your favourite it's nice to look back on such happy and uncomplicated times.
PS the Starcom of my son's era wasn't bad either!

I think this song was banned until they convinced the BBC that it was not about what it was obviously about

Memories of lots of fun with one of these in the back garden, soil was clay so made a really good landscape with roads, trenches etc.

Matchbox motorway.
Lego
Glow plug control line aircraft ( it crashed a lot)
Hammond steam engine
Raliegh Chopper.
Soap box go cart.
Cap gun
Spud gun.

I was lucky enough to live less than a mile from a very quite beach when I was growing up so spent a lot of time there, funny I am sure kids would not be aloud to do that these days. My Mother would only start worrying if I was not home by dinner time or dark in the winter.

Action man- well mine were to begin with second hand, the imagination was all I needed, without doubt the best toy ever- Like Barry, I looked after my stuff & watched kids on the estate chuck their Paratroopers off the balconies- utterly horrified I was!!!
My men were always trained hard & treated well!!

My 2 best men- 1980 SAS & Paratrooper have always been on stand-by, looking after us!
I was gutted when they brought out the Battle of Britain pilot as he Didn't have a Hurricane or Spitfire to patrol in- I even wrote a nice letter to Palitoy asking-begging them to make one!

Do you have your toys still????
I think I'll be digging the Scalextric out over Christmas!!
Barrie- do you still that wonderful collection??
My cousin had the Bentley Blower for Christmas, I wasn't allowed to touch it- all he did was moan it was unusable- to repeat same exp!
The black version is worth loads!!

Mamond steam- blimey that was mega dollar's!

Scalextric for me - the lorries I had were the quickest because they stuck to the track better than the cars.
The Mini "Ha-Ha" was cool though as it would spin round. I fondly remember a 6 wheel Tyrell too.

Hot Wheels: my first purchase was the 1968 Custom T-bird. Do you remember the stamped tin badge in each pack, that you could attach to your clothes by bending over the tab?

At the other extreme, I was probably one of the last recipients of a new Hornby clockwork "O" gauge outfit (late sixties). Our local department store had had a boxed set in its stores for years because the engine was missing, so my Dad bought a used loco and painted it up. I remember putting it together in delight, but after 30 minutes of the train running round and round the circular track provided, I tentatively suggested I might need to buy some extra track to make it interesting. My parents then produced a HUGE sack of used track and extras, which you could pick up for virtually nothing in those days because it was so old-fashioned. I never looked back!

Train sets? Don't talk to me about train sets.

I've just bought one for my nephew for Christmas. The shop assistant assured me it was very modern and realistic.

I opened the box and what was inside? Only a replacement bus service!
