Where is CV8 Mk2 reg 79HWP

Post by BJWilliams »

I have been going through some old magazines looking for some more pictures to put on my garage wall. I came across a “Thoughbred & Classic cars” of August 1981 with a front cover picture of a light blue Mk2 CV8, Registration 79 EWP. The DVLA show this as first registered August 1964. Its TAX run out 1st April 1992, it has no export marker, and looks like it is not SORN either. This CV8 has probably been on the Forum before, but a quick search did not show anything.
The article is titled “Uppercrust Bargins” as well as the CV8 there is a BMW 3.0 CSL, Jaguar Mk2 3.8, Aston Martin DBS V6 and Jaguar XJC 4.2. The article is not very complementary to the CV8 with statements like “bizarre styling”, “emphasised by a previous owner with a whimsical paint job”, “Performance from the big burbly V8 was strong if not sensational”, “the automatic transmission which makes the car very easy to drive worked well enough despite the odd kick down jerk”, “Steering is heavy and ponderous”, but the CV8 corners pretty well with surprisingly little roll”, “compared to the Aston, BMW and XJC the Jensen is decidedly vintage – a feeling exacerbated by the high scuttle, huge steering wheel and rather puny flat faced front seats that offer no side support”, ” CV8s were never particularly sumptuous inside—the mock wood facia and simple decor seemed out of place in what is meant to be an uppercrust luxury car”.
A table of each cars specification and performance is also part of the article. With the buying info as:
Aston Martin
Year / Mileage---1971 / 60,000
Asking Price ---£5250
Price new---£7501
Condition ---Very Good
BMW
Year / Mileage---1972 / 55,000
Asking Price---£4750
Price new---£6399
Condition ---Good
Jaguar Mk2
Year / Mileage---1961 / 18,000
Asking Price---£3950
Price New---£1842
Condition---Very Good
Jaguar XJC
Year / Mileage---1974 / 43,000
Asking Price---£3600
Condition---Excellent
CV8
Year / Mileage 1964 / 81,500
Asking Price---£3750
Price New---£3491
Condition---Respectable
My observations—They chose a well used CV8 , highest mileage compared to the others. --- Apart from the Jag Mk2 with only 18,000 miles, the CV8s second hand value is greater than its New Price compared to the other cars that were, apparently, in much better condition.

Sold in 2011, needing a complete restoration.

Richard C says this was 104/2203, originally BYK 55B.
"Now that chassis number is particularly interesting ‘cos it’s the one after the one before, which is the one after mine, not many people know that"

Sold in August 2011 to a gentleman in Pembrokeshire, he was a JOC member for a couple of years but didn't renew at the end of 2013, I haven't seen or heard of the car since. And it is 2203.

I must say, though I can't disagree with the magazine writer's comments, it is rather an unfair test, the Jaguar is a decade younger and the Aston DBS is the next generation of Aston (J reg so around 1970), a fairer comparison would have been with an Interceptor Mk111.

Yes, but the photo editor (or whoever does the layout) of the magazine obviously felt quite differently and put it up front and center stage of the cover.

Below a more uplifting article on the C-V8 (2282) from Volante magazine:
