Toad Hall J-H

Post by Nick Maltby »

My wife and I have just returned from a touring holiday (Avis Escort Titanium) of some of the original English colonies in the US (Va. Ri. & Ma.).

I managed to fit in visits to three car collections one of them having belonged to the grandson of Eli Lilly the pharmaceutical entrepreneur. Pristine is hardly adequate to describe the condition of those cars and the environment in which they are displayed. That is also true of the other more modern collection in Newport Ma. Both of those will feature on my website.

It is the third collection which I want to share with you or at least one particular car in that collection. There are about twenty cars all told; apart from four Datsun sports cars the rest are English - MGs, Triumphs, a couple of TVRs, two Lotus Eclats, Mki and MK.IV Sprites, a Daimler SP250 and a Jensen-Healey. All painted red, as apparently was Mr. Toad's car in 'The Wind in the Willows'.

If you want to know more you will have to visit Bill Putman's (the owner) website - Toad Hall Classic Cars.

Bill raced all these cars, in club events, in his younger days.

What the website will not tell you is that most of the cars are in a shocking condition. If anyone was perverse enough to want to store such historic cars in conditions that would guarantee that they will rot in pretty short order then he or she could find nothing better than the sheds where these cars are stored. Very sad.

Here are some photos I took of the J-H including the VIN No. in case someone wants to update their records. It may not have been red originally.

That is a sad sight. Thanks for posting the VIN plate Nick. I have updated the record. It was originally red with tan interior.

Is that aircon bolted infront of the carbs?
16 valves but 4 extra pistons.

Sad sight Nick. I could never understand the point of Aircon on an open top sports car, even in California. The drag on the front pulley must sop away plenty of power. Bad news also are the Strombergs, fitted as they were less poluting than the Dellortos, but less efficient as well. Do you have to pay to enter a 'museum' like that?

A good question re are there any charges made to visit this Museum? Michael.

The whole experience was quite bizarre. Because I had done my homework I expected to see the owner at some stage during our visit. As it happened he was walking down the drive towards the dilapidated sheds where the cars are kept, just as we arrived. At that stage I did not know it was the owner but I guessed that it was and addressed him as such. He then introduced us to his handy man who looks after the cars (flicking them with an oily rag occasionally). After that he said "I'll have to rush you for $16".
I looked at my wife who was carrying our dollars in her purse. I think that she was a little taken aback that we were being asked to pay to enter this grotty building. I think that she offered to go and sit in the car. Bill then said "Don't worry if you haven't got the money." He was a pleasant man in his early 80s, very trim. Having taken our money he disappeared and left us in the hands of his very forthcoming assistant. The whole set up brought Don Quixote and Sancho Panza to mind.
The funny thing is it gets good marks on TripAdvisor with only a few visitors telling it like it is. I guess it can be seen as very quaint if you are not a car nut who despairs at seeing historic and potentially valuable cars in this condition.
We were the only ones there to start with then a couple and a group of four came in, just as we were beating a retreat.

If you want to read more and see photos of the other cars, I have written a blog - http://www.carsceneinternational.com/vi ... is-ma-usa/
