If you are going to put a 7 litre engine in a smallish engine bay there will always be a degree of heat build up. Insulation between the engine bay and cabin has minimal effect in my experience.

The only two things I have found that have any effect are the biggest cooling fans you can fit ( the more air coming in means a cooler engine bay) and getting the A/C working the best you can.

Headers do help a little but this is minimal.

As far as an engine driven fan it is Bill Smith on his SP who has one.

"there will always be a degree of heat build up" - very good - any pun intended there Steve? :D

a member here in Wales has an engine driven fan too - off a Merc I believe and fitted to a viscous coupling

I have a new radiator with Bosh motors and fans and the pre radiator area totally blocked off to eliminate any air from comer in the grill openings and not going through the radiator. It is important to have no areas of air bypassing the radiator. I believe 4 rows. Bought it back in early 90's then re checked in 2011. RacerJoe

if the engine temp is correct then what is the need for more air. I believe the proble
m with heat buildup in the cabin is transfer of engine bay air flowing into the cabin. Somewhere the engine bay heat is flowing in. If I am correct then more air pressure would result in more air entering the cabin. I have a friend whose AC putting out sub 50 degree F but still has a huge heat problem. The key on the cabin side is where the hot air is interning. Possibly a smoke detector may help prove where the heat is comin in from. RacerJoe

Joe,
I think you are talking about your beautiful convertible, aren't you?
When is the last time you drove it?
Stainless-steel heat shields mounted on stand-offs work well if properly installed to minimize heat transfer from the exhaust and hot engine/gearbox.
(Where there's space to do this.) But tricky to install properly.
And extra insulation in the cabin helps. All over the transmission tunnel, floor, and on the bulkhead.
But if you reckon you are getting excess heat exiting the louvres and entering through the cabin intake, try duct-taping over the louvres on the inside surface with metal-foil tape. HVAC tape.
They are really only there to impress onlookers anyway and don't do so much for cooling. :)
Cheers,
Adrian

Kenny I am not familiar with the extractors you speak of please explain for me to better expand. One thing you may want to try is bypass your water hoses going to the heater core to see if there is any difference plus if you can plug off the openings that the heat normally comes out of during warmer months. Just an experiment. Racerjoe

Hi Joe,

'Extractors' is an Australian term for tubular exhaust headers,

If you want a cool cabin I suggest you upgrade to a Sanden. Much more efficient.

My good friend Frank Schwartz has one that is putting out 47 degree air and still the heat soak is taking his toll I suggested to Frank to bypass the water hoses to the heater core as it is my belief that engine air is getting in the air system and creeping in the car. Just my theory. RacerJoe
