4000Km South African trip in 2 Mk3 Interceptors

Post by Philip Lochner »

:D

Yep, guaranteed to make me smile - a lot!

On Sat 22 April we depart on this trip, taking the long way to Knysna where our trip climaxes with the Knysna Motor show on Sunday 30 April where I believe we might have 4 Interceptors, one of which will hopefully be the only FF in South Africa. Here's the route we intend to take, going there on Google Maps : https://tinyurl.com/k4d7xa9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A friend and his wife will be driving one of my two Interceptors and I will drive the other. We'll swop every now and then to experience both cars as we go along.

The previous time I did this trip in my 74, the best fuel consumption I got was 7.2 Km/L. It was on that trip that I discovered that the coolant thermostat did not work very well and kept the engine running well below 80degC where warmup enrichment stops. This meant it was running richer than it should during much of our trip. Improving on that figure will just sweeten the deal!

I'll try post pics and updates whenever possible.
Best regards
Philip

Wish I was doing it. Driving my favourite car through my favourite country looking forward to a braai and a beer at the end of a day, how much closer to heaven could you get?

You going back the same way or a convoluted trip back via Plet, PE, est London and Durban then north ?? :shock:

Looks like I will miss you by 4 days in Knysna if plans work out for a quick, late planned trip......maybe another time catch up in Centurian again

No nothing to do with that, work dictates when and where I go....was planning on being in CPT this week, but that was cancelled and Durban in mid May has been put off.....seems every time I plan a trip to ZA at the moment something goes wrong and so it is all cancelled.

Maybe in Louis Trichard area in September or October and so will transit ORT and maybe stop off again and meet up with you at home?

Once plans are ever definite will let you know.

Made it all the way to Bonnievale - About 1400km so far. Only trouble is the TX-valve on the '73's aircon system decided to block on the way. Got it replaced in Oudtshoorn today.

'74 is giving 7.2 - 7.4 km/L
'73 is around 5.8 km/L

A well known pub on Route 62 between Ladismith and Barrydale. Not sure why....
