I would think a variant of the BMW 330d / 335d should be on your list. I have just come out of a 3 year old 530d and the BMW 6 pot diesels are superb. One thing though, BMW tend to put run flat tyres on most of their cars which wear quite well but are incredibly noisy. Not so bad on the 5 series as it is a better insulated car but I found the road noise on anything other than super-smooth surfaces quite intrusive on the 3 series. A 335d xdrive would be a serious piece of kit and would have been my choice, but I couldn't resist the lure of reduced company car tax on the 330e PHEV

Various Subaru's to choose from. Unburstible, AWD, very nice and smooth flat 4 or 6. Plenty of power. Some with hi/lo gear. Last forever.

BMW 430 Gran Coupe worth a look Martin or upgrade to a 435 but go for the luxury rather than sport suspension 0 - 60 in under 6 seconds.
Let us know!

I test drove the V6 3.0 Jaguar XE today. Blistering performance, great ride, particularly for the "S" model and great handling.
Two downsides: 1. the small windows make it feel slightly claustrophobic. 2. Headroom in the back is low - my head touches the roof lining.
I actually tried a BMW 33D which surprised me at its performance. Really great!

That's the rub, broken down for the 2nd time within 18 months. Last time ECU (best part of £1000) and this time electronic steering lock at another £800.... Time for it to go.

Since you completely ignored my 911 suggestion with a flat 6 here is another 6er:

Reliant Scimitar Se5, 3.0 ltr, V6 - all you need Martin.

Why are you seriously looking for a bloody modern car? Boring to the bones they are. Colin's suggestion is the only acceptable option.

Jens, I didn't ignore the 911 but the last time I looked, the 911 was a two door SPORTS car. I specifically said NOT a SPORTS car!

Also, we want 4 doors.

The Scimitar might have 4 doors in Germany but here, it was only a 2-door car! ( as per your photo  )

Maybe new cars are a bit boring, but that's what my better half wants. New, reliable, 4-doors, very well built, comfortable, quick enough, without rattling out of tooth fillings..
