Interceptor w/o power steering. How many were made?

Post by Denis »

I know, that until certain time, power steering was an option on Interceptor.

Howewer, most people ordered it.
How many cars left factory w/o PS?
And starting from which serial number PS became standart?

P.S. I know, I need to buy Mr.Calver book, I already understood that I need it.

A local SW owner (John Mk1) has an early Mk1 with Kingpins Etc.(115/2584)

This went back to the factory in 1974 to have power steering fitted.

The factory cut the chassis tubes and grafted on a Mk2 front end!

Understeer - Hitting the fence with the front of the car
Oversteer - Hitting the fence with the rear of the car
Horsepower -How fast you hit the fence
Torque - How far you take the fence with you

Is the change known as the 1 1/2 . That is when they improved the front end, sorry I am not sure at what stage or number that occurred but do remember being told mine was a mk 11/2 when I first got it. I am sure someone will explain or refer us to the new book :)

As the changes were not made at once it is not "fair" to talk about a mark 1.5. This is from Richard Calver:

2845
About the crossover point for switching to 7 studs to hold the parcel shelf. Early cars use 5 studs.

3000
After about VIN 3000 have fixed quarterlights and the vent on the C-pillar. Before 3000, they have swivelling quarterlights and no vent at the rear.

3200
From approx VIN 3200 they have Marston crossflow radiators instead of Bowman downflow radiators. The later radiators are better.

3231 RHD
3134 LHD
From these VINs, they get the balljoint suspension and Girling brakes. Before that, they have kingpin suspension and Dunlop brakes, both of which are hard to get parts for.
The future ain’t what it used to be.

This question of Mk1, Mk1.5 crops up from time to time.
I have a copy of the Service Repair Times book 4th edition published by JML in October 1974 covering Mk1, Mk2, Mk3, SP, all series of FF and Mk3 Series 4.
Here they make a specific distinction for repair times for Mk1s.
Interceptor Mk1 prior to Chassis 3231 is referred to in the repair time under Code I
Interceptor Mk1 after Chassis 3231 is referred to in the repair times under Code IA

I think, that power steering became standart much earlier. Probably somewhere in 27XX. It wast prior so called "1+" improvements.

Another distinctive changes of 1+ gen. :

- different ashtrays
- lack of plugs on door cards
- lack of vent windows
- different power window switches
- smaller front seats

But power steering became standart much earlier.

PAS became optional from October 1967, /2553 NEA 2F factory demonstrator was so fitted and explains why it was out of sequence. PAS became standard in October 1968 from /3010 together with through-flow vents, fixed quarter lights etc and a big price hike to over £5k. A very quick scan through Calver suggests that some75 Interceptors were built without PAS.
