JOC list of members booklet from 1976

Post by redranch »

Going though all my car stuff and I came across this JOC list of members booklet from 1976. It gives the names and addresses of over 500 members, but sadly doesn't list their cars. But I'm sure there were a few new Interceptors in those garages back in 76...

If there's a chap listed by the name of John Shannon, he had a 541S
It was registered WUB 1. Long since sold after his family came along and sadly, the car is currently "unknown"....

John Shannon of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, was JOC member 39, he owned 541S 100/2092, registration recorded as WWB 1.

All this from a sort of 'no reason to do it except that it's interesting' project David and Jane Turnage started where we Registrars decided to identify the first 500 JOC members and their cars, we managed to find 497 names of the 500, though not always complete with car details.

The DVLA has no record of WWB 1, or, as you say, WUB 1, but David and Jane may know what happened to the car.

Regards

John

There is some confusion re this 541S.

The registrar records show a registration WUB 1 against an early 541 (chassis 46)

AND

the number was probably transferred to 100/S1092 (NB 100/2092 is not a valid number) which was owned by John Shannon (John himself confirmed the registration as WUB 1 and not WWB 1). This car was seen at the 60th birthday event at Gaydon in Aug 2014 with registration number ABM 37A. Therefore the car is not "currently unknown".

Many thanks! I shall email this photo to John as he lives just around the corner from me :D
He had sold the car before I met him but was interested to know if it still survived. I'll ask him about what colour it was.
That's if the photo is allowed to be shared?

Yes, I took the photo myself so feel free. I've now added a copyright notice to the pic to make it clear it can be shared.

Thank you :-)
I only wish to share it with John himself and have asked what colour it was during his ownership.

I just heard from John who was thrilled to bits to hear that his old car is looking good and still alive!

Regarding the photo, colour etc. he says the following; "That really is amazing news & the car looks superb! Did you take the photo?
It was dark yellow when I had it, resprayed over dark blue - darker than in the photo."

So, a nice little bit of extra history.

Hi Martin, WUB1 belongs now to Alan Spriggs who lives in Boston. He and his wife used to attend our area meetings on a very regular basis and dare I say I feel it was these meetings that spurred them onto the full and comprehensive restoration that he did on the 541. I know he sold the plate off the car many years ago and then he bought M1WUB to help with losing such a great number! Alan and Marion are enjoying the car now, I know Alan has been a JOC member since the early 70's when he bought the 541, David Newby used to bow down to him as I have a feeling he is membership number 36? (I too have the list of members above but it will take me ages to dig it out!)
Hope this info helps Martin.
All the best
Simon.

Many thanks Simon.
As John was member 37, it's possible they knew each other..... I shall ask!
I'll also pass on those details to John who I'm sure will be interested to know.
Thanks again, Martin.

I just received this from John:

"Hi Martin

How I wish I had kept a lot more details of my ownership & a copy of the log-book but without turning the house upside-down I have not found anything more than in the envelope you have seen.

I am listed in the first JOClub magazine issued in August 1972 so must have bought it in mid-late 1971 from a chap near Heathrow late at night on a filling station forecourt – not a very sensible thing to do ! He was not called Burton but I got the idea that it had been owned by somebody connected with ’Burton the Tailors’ but may be wrong.

I must have sold it by mid-1973 as James would have out-grown his carrycot on the back seat and Tom was on the way by then. Again I don’t know who bought it.

It was certainly dark mustard yellow but dark blue was evident in the engine bay & the upholstery was red leather.

It is interesting that the register record shows WUB 1 for an early 541 when the 541S was the last of the type, so perhaps it had been transferred from an earlier 541. Also 100/2092 not being valid is strange.

Yes, it would be great to contact the current owner if you do track him down – I now regret selling all the cars & bikes I had owned but so do most people I expect!"

What a fantastic find! I'll send a link to John who owned WUB1 on a 541-S in the early 70's. He was right to think that an earlier 541 had worn the same number plate.
