International Weekend Dinner/Dance. UPDATE>

Post by Alan Smith1 »

At the last Jensen Owners' Club committee meeting a proposal was passed that at the International Weekend "˜Dinner Dance’ the dance would be replaced with some other form of "˜entertainment’. Since that decision was made it has been difficult to judge members attitude to an alternative form of activity, amusement or entertainment. I would like to open up this discussion to the forum to gauge people’s opinion on what direction we should take. Please give your comments and also include the opinions of your partners! I shall also try the poll, so please give a vote if you attend, consider attending or feel strongly about this.

 Hello everybody, it’s Sunday evening and I have just returned from the Committee Meeting at the Black Country Museum. Lunch was different this time as the whole committee plus guests stood in a 1920’s street eating fish & chips fried in Lard out of paper, fantastic, but I digress. We had a lengthy discussion on the International Weekend and with the help of your comments posted here, telephone calls and letters I have received, the following was agreed: - During the final courses of coffee/tea, cheese and biscuits we will be entertained with some live music, probably a vocalist. We have somebody on standby but cannot say more until bookings have been made. This female singer’s repertoire and quality extends from very easy listening to dance and then up-tempo numbers. This will lead very nicely into a versatile Disco. This means that those that want to dance straight away can, those that want to talk can also do so and those that want to go to the bar until their type of music is played are also satisfied. This also means no thumpingly loud music until we really get going.
The committee have also decided that the entertainment will come from club funds ensuring that all ticket revenue will go on the meal.
I would like to thank all those that gave their comments and took part in the poll.
:P

dinner dance

How about just having a disco rather than a band - at least that way it's easier to turn it down. Probably cheaper as well....

I was planning on attending the international this year - i tend to alternate each year between this and the festival of speed. Now, as my car never will win any concours events, the pleasure in attending the international for me, and the wife, is the social side of the event. Consequently, if there's nowt happening after dinner then i doubt i'll attend. i agree that a disco could be a compromise...

Hi Alan
As a fairly new member I haven't had the pleasure of attending, not likely to so long as it clashes with Le Mans, but if it were some other date, I like the idea of the formal(ish) dinner which should ideally be followed by something more relaxed to allow everyone to mingle, I think a disco might be too noisy to allow this, maybe casino type atmosphere would be pleasant,(obviously without money changing hands for legal reasons). For pity's sake though no karaoke please.
Oh hell maybe Keith's right, & you should go with the bucking bronco (unless thats rhyming slang for something)

The bucking bronco is terrific fun and it's great when the young women get on (thongs, etc).

To add a little of history to this poll, we have traditionally had a dinner/dance with a very good band or group. Lots of people like this and it's been the format for many years.

But by the very nature of such a group, it is loud, and a lot of members want to mingle and talk to other fellow Jensen enthusiasts, especially people they may not have seen since the year before.

So a lot of members abandon the dance and congregate somewhere else.

So basically all the JOC committee is trying to do is to satisfy as many members as possible (and impossible and thankless task).

If there is not an after dinner dance/group/band, then of course there will still be entertainment, and any suggestions on this forum will be gratefully received.

Cheers Keith. Given that my birthday, which i'd sooner forget, is on the 14th, it'd be rude not to attend really...nice looking place...

With reference to the Dinner/Dance at the International Weekend. We have enjoyed the last two years but agree that it would be nice to mingle and chat straight after the meal say for an hour or two but then still finish the evening off with a band or disco so that people can still have a boogie before bedtime. Maybe after the meal we could have a quartet similar to the one that played at the International at Nottingham. Then there would be background music while people have their coffee and chat away to each other. If bands and discos kept the sound down a few decibells then there would not be any need to have this debate at all, people would be able to talk and dance at the same time. We noticed that this is what happened at our wedding reception as the music got louder people left to go to another room where it was quieter. Or are we all just getting to old?

Dinner/dance

Post by Tracyj »

I agree with Colin and Diane with regards to the Dinner/Dance at the International Weekend. Steve and I have enjoyed the last three years Internationals, but having an hour to relax, have coffee and chat after the meal would be great followed a little later by a band or disco to dance the night away. Last years band I thought was fantastic. You are never too old to have a good time. As for the bucking bronco can’t wait to see Zac and Keith on the bronco - thongs and all!
