Re: Ouch !!
Not a classic, but I feel a connection as it was OUR CAR, bought from VW in 2015 with just nine miles on the clock.
Our neighbours knocked and said we should come outside at once. We found the family VW up! (sic) parked in the drive. Only thing is, we had left it in the road and facing a different direction! Someone had rammed it 20 feet along the pavement, hit the brick gatepost and turned it up our drive. It's a tough little car but the rear wheel was now hanging off, plus all the other damage.
About twenty neighbours were standing outside, hearing how the villain had allegedly left a phone and knife in a nearby cul-de-sac, and saying that he'd be miles away by now. But no! In his drug addled state, the culprit decide to return to the scene of the crime, grinding to a halt in his stolen GTI with the front tyre hanging off. He jumped out and started agitatedly asking for his phone, before manically diving into the footwells for it. I decided to quietly open the door and remove the key from the ignition and blend back into the crowd. Might not have been so keen if I had realised that the car contained (allegedly) three further knives including a machete. He was so drugged up that he failed to notice the police arrive, until they had him in an armlock on the pavement and vigorously suggested he let them cuff him, instead of spending several minutes shouting "I didn't DO anything" and "My Dad's in the SAS - you wait".
After about an hour they took him off in a paddy wagon, and removed the GTI from the middle of the road - stolen in January, it had (literally) been on their radar a few times, and the ex-owner had already got his insurance payout.
The sad remains of our car were removed within the hour. Yes, that's the rear spring hanging out!

Re: Ouch !!
Glad you're all right and weren't in it at the time! Good job removing the key. Jogged my memories of dealing with addled individuals on the midnight shift at the ambulance service during college.

Yes, I am very glad no one was hurt or injured.
But you know what his dad from the SAS had often told him:
“Who Dares, Wins!”
(That’s probably why he came back for his phone!)

Do the world a favour, when they eventually lock him up, whip the key out of the door and blend into the crowd with it.

Re: Ouch !!
What surprises me is that the neighbours had to come and knock, must have been quite a racket! Then again your driveway is probably half a mile long...

Re: Ouch !!
Sorry to read about the damage to your car Stephen. But great presence of mind to take the keys out of the other car's ignition.

Re: Ouch !!
Yes, the driveway to Carter Towers is quite a distance, especially when the drawbridge is up.
Actually we are about 20 feet from the pavement (standard UK front garden) and I did hear a faint crunch, but thought my son had dropped something expensive in his room.
The culprit, who was about 30, was taken into police custody. Bearing in mind the circumstances, I asked the policeman who took my statement, if they had caught a criminal linchpin. No, he replied, just an idiot.

Re: Ouch !!
Stephen, be happy that he didn't hurt you with his knifes and machetes. It's a pity about the nice car. Beside my small garage I'm also running a depannage-service. Unfortunately it happens very much often that the havarists are drunk or drugged and from time to time I am getting their keys away from them telling them I've the feeling you're unable to drive at the moment. Sometimes they're getting aggressive against me or my employees - we had some fights...
Hope the insurance will refund you
