That is what happens if the timing gear didn´t work as it should.

As the saying goes 'a picture is worth a thousand words'.!
We can see 8 sooty larger inlet valves which could suggest a rich or worn carburator or possibly a slow choke pulloff.
But more interesting is the pair of white exhaust valves, i bet these were the two centre ones on the nearside head next to the crack in the exhaust manifold, so did an air leak cause elevated exhaust temps to crack the manifold or did the crack allow oxygen in to raise the outlet temp to burn the valves?.
