Interceptor VIN /Chassis Number Plate

Hi All,

I'm wondering, is there any location on a MkIII where I might find the VIN number, other than the plate on the driver's door frame?

I ask only to save myself from some serious inconvenience, as apparently California requires that the VIN be engraved in 2 places or I need to take the car for a special inspection...

Any assistance appreciated, thanks

Joel

Plate ?

front of the chassis crossmember.

Let me know the outcome

Thanks John, so you mean I should look behind the metalwork that's just behind the front bumper?

Thanks so much... I see now. Unfortunately not a good spot for the California Department of Motor Vehicles, they won't put the car up on a lift. Was hoping to find something visible in the engine bay etc... guess I could "create" a plate... hmmm

Well, you can see it without a lift if you don´t mind to creep in front of the car. 8)
Alternatively you can stamp or even engrave a plate of plain steel and weld/rivet/bolt it at a convenient place.
Not too much people will know where the VIN should be ...

Shouldn't there be a plate on the inner wing in the engine bay? Or was this moved to the door post for US models? My FF and my old mark III (I think) also had a plate in the glovebox (between the seats).

I think FFs also have the chassis number on the bottom of the bonnet frame - not sure if this applies to Interceptors as well.

Sorry to be a bit airy fairy, it's difficult when the FF is a couple of hundred miles away!

the Mk1 also has details in the cubby locker between the seats.

I think Robey's do a very nice chassis plate.
But their site is down tonight.

Just ordered a custom plate, $20 to save a massive amount of bureaucratic hell is well worth it:-)

Now just keep my fingers crossed that the inspector is not a Jensen fan...

Thanks,

Joel

Thomas,
Is your anti-roll bar special in any way? (It looks shiny-new.)
The mounting arrangement looks different from other Int IIIs.
Yours is under the chassis structure, others appear to be bolted to the front end of the structure.
The reason I'm asking is I wonder if the uprated ADDCO bars some guys are ordering will fit all Interceptors.

I'm not sure if it has to do with model year or region (NADA-spec?) but at the Sauerland weekend I noticed one other Convertible also had this type anti-roll bar. So there must be 2 different ones out there. I haven't checked the parts manual. That might give some answers.

It might also explain why some set-ups are stiffer than others, as the effective arm lengths will be different.
Imagine, if the bar could be placed 3 feet in front of the present position, it would have almost no effect at all.

Yes - i can confirm my car is NADA-spec (2211-1490) build date according to plaquard on B-post Dec 1974.
The car is pretty close to original condition (3POs, 33.500 mls, about 15 yrs in storage) and i am sure it is the original sway bar. I just replaced the rubber bushings and brackets. If anybody is interested in specific dimensions i am happy to provide measurements.
