Ginger Baker holding a Jensen model?

Post by Han Kamp »

Does anyone know what Jensen model Ginger Baker is holding in his left hand in the b/w picture of him taking receipt of his FF from (I believe) Richard Graves?
To my knowledge there wasn't a model of an Interceptor in those days apart from perhaps the Dinky FF, but this model doesn't look like the Dinky. It is a light colour and has a dark roof and the bonnet is open.

To me, it could easily be the Dinky model repainted. There was a slightly later FF model (Dinky 1008) that came in un-assembled form and could easily be painted in any colour and then screwed together. If someone is spending the price of a house on a car, getting a model repainted would not be a big deal.

It was a specially repainted Dinky FF, in the same colours as his own car, that Dick Graves was presenting him.. ( Jensen would have done this )

His kids played with the model until the late seventies, where it got lost unforunately.

In Nov 2009 I presented him with a replica, where Dick Graves and Ginger took the same photo again...

Thanks Kieron, no doubt you are correct since you oviously have first hand information. I was sort of hoping it was a misterious unknown model......

Yes, that's the one. Dinky did a kit as well as a ready made model, which can be found on ebay every day for a few bucks.

Ginger Baker's Dinky FF

Post by ajm541s »

Ginger paid a visit to the factory while his car was being built, in order to see its progress down the build line. Just for fun we put a dinky model in a gap in the line created for it, 'That's your car there, Mr Baker'!. Afterwards I had the Dinky painted to match his paint and trim spec.

In actual fact there were no Dinky kits then, it was simply a matter of unscrewing the base of the model which released the body from 'glass' and trim. making it easy to paint the bodies and trim panels. On my desk I had a row of Dinky FF's painted in all the available exterior colours.

I used to rebuild a lot of model cars at that time and it was usual for the baseplate to be riveted on, so the fact that this one used a screw must have meant they always had the possibility of a kit in mind. I had the FF, a Ford Transit and an AEC Red Arrow bus in Dinky kit form - anyone remember any others?

I had a Ford D800 tipper truck.
Still have the remains of it in mum & dads loft!
There were many dinky toys that were screwed rather than rivited together, but were never done as a Action kit.
Funny that they just didn't use one of the other as a means of fixing.
Quite handy if you need to swap a panel to make a mint one though!
Not so much with the FF, the shades of yellow although subtle vary huge time! Esp N reg onward where even the panels are more often than not miss matched, the quality fell badly off toward the end, in a last ditch to keep costs down they went the china route, compare the Dinky Rover 3500 (SD1) to Corgi's, no comparison-they were similar price too.
Bloomin shame, I wonder if any of the moulds/tooling survived?

The reticent Ginger Baker...

Post by PaulMcElhinney »

It concerns me that Ginger Baker may not have actually liked his FFs but may have been too polite to tell the factory :
