RIP David Newby

Post by zacmarshall »

The club's Jensen-Healey Registrar and former Concours Secretary and Chairman passed away earlier this month.

David was very well known in the club with his Jensen-Healey VRT 823M and FF II 872 AYL.

David bought his first Healeys when they were still in production.

David's first Healey was replaced with VRT 823M, a Mustard colour 1974 Mark 2 Healey which started out as a daily driver but in David's ownership became something rather special.

When David first joined the JOC some of the older owners didn't exactly welcome Healey owners, the first event David and Helen attended they were told to park 'over there out of the way with the other Healeys'. The popularity of the Healey and the increased profile of the car in general with the wider general public has a lot to do with David's championing of the car. David and Helen drove the Healey all over the UK and Europe, including on many camping holidays (I was always impressed with how much they got in the boot, but as David said they had plenty of practice).

David did his back in and needed an automatic, as one does he went out and used this as an excuse to buy an Interceptor, buying an Interceptor III MWP 808K from Philip Russell, ex Concours Secretary.

In September 2006 David bought FF 872 AYL (keeping the personal plate with the car which it has carried for most of its life).

David took over from Alan Smith as Chairman and to mark the handover they decided to drive from John o'Groats down to Land's End without using motorways.

David went everywhere with his cars, even being the first to agree to go to Scandinavia.
