HANWORTH CLASSIC - Royal Bushy Park, Hampton. 30th June 2019

Post by Chris_R »

The Annual Hanworth Classic And 40s & 50s Jive & Swing Dance Event
Held in Bushy Park, Hampton Court, come and enjoy this amazing Royal Park Venue.
Free Entry to the event along with Free Extra Public Parking on the day.
The event runs from 11am to 4pm but we will need to be on site and parked by around 10am I think.
All that is asked is that you make a donation to the adopted Charity... Shooting Star Chase the local children’s Hospices in Hampton and Guildford so please give generously as every £ raised goes directly to Shooting Star. In 2018 over £17,200 was raised so PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD and bring a picnic (no BBQ's please) and join in the fun for a great day out for all the family. Hampton Court Palace is also just a few minutes walk away if you want to escape from the cars for an hour or two!

Register here: http://www.hanworthclassic.org.uk/register-vehicle.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I have registered the Jensen Owners Club for a club space so if you do register to come please make sure to select Jensen Owners Club from the list of clubs.

Hope to see as many as possible to support this very worthwhile charity fundraising event.

The organisers have just told me that we have 9 Jensens booked in on the day for this so I just want to thank everyone who has already booked in for their support for this charitable event.

There are just 3 more club spaces left available

Apparently we have one of the best club positions in the show this year so if we can fill all 12 spaces allocated to us it will be quite a showing.

Quite a way for you to come Duncan from Crewe but you'd be more than welcome on the day.

Linked to Hampton Court Palace by the Longford River, Bushy Park is famed for its mix of waterways, gardens and grassland, and roaming herds of red and fallow deer and birdlife including woodpeckers, kingfishers and kestrels. Bushy Park is one of London’s eight Royal Parks and covers an area of 1,099 acres.

King Charles I had the idea of creating an artificial waterway in the park because Hampton Court Palace was always short of water. There was nowhere locally with a sufficient fall of water and so the Longford River was built exceeding 12 miles in length. It was designed by Nicholas Lane in 1638-39 and took 9 months to complete and cost £4000!

The mile long Chestnut Avenue was conceived by Sir Christopher Wren as a formal approach to Hampton Court Palace in the reign of William III & Mary II. Flanked on both sides by a single row of horse chestnuts and four rows of limes, it marks the park's zenith in terms of royal ambitions and sophistication. The view from Teddington Gate provides the most striking view of the Avenue, with the Arethusa 'Diana' Fountain and the Banqueting Hall as the backdrop.

During the First World War, areas of land in the park were turned over to the plough to 'Dig for Victory'. King George V gave his permission to use Upper Lodge as a home for Canadian Convalescents. Queen Mary visited the troops and made sure entertainment was provided with the help of local people.

During the Second World War, large areas of the parks were again turned over for the production of food. From 1942, Bushy Park became the site of a large U.S. base called Camp Griffiss, headquarters to a number of the Allied departments. General Dwight Eisenhower was averse to working in the centre of London during the Second World War and decided instead to make Bushy Park the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) centre for planning Operation Overlord, the 1944 D-Day.
