Retro Festival 29th July 2018 - Marquise, France

Post by Chris_R »

Every 2 years, for 1 day in summer, the small town of Marquise (midway between Calais and Boulogne) bans all modern cars from the town and turns back the clock to the 1960s and only cars of that era are permitted in the town. Shops and local businesses all join in and support the festival with a retro market and create a historic atmosphere.
In 2018 this will be on Sunday 29th July.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 cars are expected to turn out, most will be from the 1950s through to the mid-1960s although the organisers do stretch their definition to include some later cars so while we will welcome all Jensen cars we would particularly like to hear from anyone with 541's, C-V8's or Mk1 Interceptors.
Period 1950s or 1960s clothing is optional but is encouraged to help create the atmosphere. A lot of people will be dressed "in period". For men this is not too difficult, mens clothing has not changed that much over the years, a white shirt and a pair of slacks could do. For ladies it's a chance to dress up :D . More information about the event can be seen on their website here: https://retrofestivalcotedopale.com/presentationgb/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/retrofestivalcotedopale/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Herve Lequippe from Paris and I have decided to put together a weekend break for anyone who would like to take part in this event.

We have arranged a deal with a local hotel for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights (Friday night optional) and there are some other local attractions which could be visited on a Saturday local driveout such as a Ceramic Museum in Desvres (10 mins from the hotel), the crypt (the largest in France) below the Basilica Notre Dame in Boulogne (20 mins), also the town of Boulogne. A bit further away is a Glass Factory at Arques (35 mins) and for wartime history there is La Coupole or Le Blockhaus D'Eperleques V2 Rocket sites, both about 1hr drive away. Also in the locality are the historic walled towns of Bergues, Gravelines and Montreuil-sur-Mer, all within about 1 hour driving from the hotel.

The hotel we have chosen is the Hostellerie du Château des Tourelles, up to 29 rooms available, their website is http://www.hotel-le-wast.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, the hotel is just a 15 minute drive from the town of Marquise and has a large private parking space behind the hotel. For anyone coming from the UK, the hotel is just 30 mins from Calais. All food is home cooked, even the bread!

For Saturday, the price is 110€ per person for a double room or 125€ for a single.
This price includes: Bed & Breakfast plus Welcome Drinks, Aperitifs, 4-course dinner inclusive with wine and coffee

For Friday night and Sunday night, the price is 75€ per person for a double room or 90€ for a single.
This price includes: Bed & Breakfast plus aperitif of Kir or beer or juice and menu of the day dinner inclusive with wine and coffee

Our proposed itinerary is:
Saturday 28th July - arrival , welcome drinks, relax and grand dinner (see above)
Sunday 29th July - Retro festival from 9.00am onwards (Festival closes 21:00).
Monday 30th July - depart
Optionally you can arrive at the hotel on Friday 27th July and do a drive out on Saturday to visit some local attractions. Quoted Friday price includes dinner on arrival.

Please let us know ASAP if you are interested in joining this event. Bookings will be secured on payment of a deposit (end of January) and final payment will be required in advance, details of these arrangements will be published in due course. My wife and I will be there for the day, we looked into doing this months ago and have already booked our accommodation. We would have popped into the town, to take a look, on our way back from the Loire last summer but the rear axle bearings gave up so we limped straight home.
Should be quite a spectacular event, can't wait. We hope to see some of you there.
