Castle Coombe Autumn Classic - Historic Race Day

Post by Clive Bishop »

Dear All,

After a amazing turn out last year of a large proportion of all Jensen models, that time has come to advance register with us if you would like to attend this years event - Saturday 07th October.

There will be a full day racing by historic cars (which is even more fun if it rains) and we have a place alongside the circuit just along from the paddock. http://autumnclassic.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Prices for this year are £15.00 per adult, Senior admission is £10.00 per person, children are free under 16 when accompanied. The car places on the JOC stand area are free and like last year we will have a support vehicle and cover in case of in climate weather.

We currently have 10 places but if anything like last year we had to increase this very quickly, so if you are interested then please book early.

As we are subject to the circuits terms and conditions, please send a message or email us so that we can send a booking form, which has to be completed and sent with payment.

If you like the racing at Goodwood Revival, you'll like this great event. More accessible and room to breath.

Would be there had our diary allowed. And after last year, the sun is going to shine for sure!

For those of you going with or without your Jensen, one of the cars attending has now been invited to be on a special "Star Cars" stand in the paddock area and will be driving the circuit with other cars on a showcase circuit.

Keep a eye out for a 541R PEA 541 as this is the works prototype Le Mans race car and current holder of London to Paris record.

Hopefully the owner of the car Daniel Bristow's father will bring another 541 along to replace this car on the JOC stand.

Hi all,
I attended the Castle Combe Autumn Classic meet today and had a great time. All the Jensen folk I met were friendly and helpful and a credit to the club. The photo shows a Mk 1 ("Britclassic" of this forum), II (mine) and a III Nickolas Howgego) side by side on the JOC stand at the show. Also in attendance were two 541's, a CV-8, and another Mk III.

Thanks to Clive Bishop and his family for organizing the JOC stand.

Phil

Please let me add my thanks too.
Appreciate your work in organising this, it was a super day.
Great to meet Phil and Nick and the other members present.
Picked up some great tips and useful advice.
Just out of curiosity, I measured (for the first and probably last time) my mpg, on the run to and from Wiltshire - 210 mile round trip - and made a flat 20 mpg. Quite respectable I thought and nothing like some of the numbers bandied about.
Again thanks Clive and family for the day.
Thanks Phil and Nick for your company.

Best regards,

Edward

Based on your experience with your Mk I I checked my speedo today and found that when it reads 70mph I am actually doing only 60mph, and I need to hit 102mph on the speedo to reach a true 90mph. Even when it reads 50 mph I am only doing 44. All this explains why I was been passed by many cars when I thought I was doing 80 on the M4!

The odometer reads about 7% too low as well.

I recently checked the odometer on my MK III and it loses 1/10 mile every 2 miles going by the mile markers on the highway. Don't know about the speedo though.

Phil,

Good Morning Phil,

Worth knowing!

All you have to do now is to multiply your speed by 15% and your miles by 7.5% to get a rough idea. I think recalibrating the instruments to read true is an involved job that might not be worth it on a selectively used Classic. Others may have different opinions.

I thought your suggestion of an emergency spares box was excellent, as was Nick’s thought on checking spare tyre pressure. Those are both now on my ‘to do’ list.

Have a great day.

Best regards,

Edward

Dear All,

So glad that you all had a good day, I will be contacting the circuit as there were some things that they screwed up regarding the club stand, but hopefully you were not too effected by it.

To follow on from the string of comments about the cars and their "qwerks", I carry a emergency set of things, such as a set of belts, ballast resistor, rotor arm and spare dissy cap plus a long HT lead plus the usual cable ties etc. On a longer multiday trip then there will be a increase in consumables / semi consumable items, especially electrical items carried.

On the Devon trip that I confirmed to go on before Castle Coombe set their dates, I had more spares but ended up having to fit a new HT lead as one of mine popped off on the last day whilst driving out of the hotel and so when we parked up at Clovelly , it was on the floor and extremely damaged.

Tire pressures will depend on which tyres you have, as mine run on Blockley tyres I set mine at their recommended pressure of 30 psi and as ever check them before I go.

As for instrument accuracy, haven't paid particular attention to it but maybe I will in the future check the speed against a gps system but as I normally am in the second half of the speedo dial and the needle bounces around and am still scaring modern cars as I pass them, this is not on the priority list!

Regards

Clive

Like the others I usually drive using the speed on my TomTom to make sure I am about right, but I forgot to take it today. However there is a free app called speedometer that you can use on the phone. Using that today 70 on the car speedo was really 60 on the app which accords with the usual reading I get using the TomTom.

Just looked in more detail it does loads of clever thinks including a heads up display.
