North Coast 500

Post by KevinB »

Now, anyone fancy trying this? A circular route taking in spectacular scenery and empty roads over 500 miles (once you get here).

https://www.northcoast500.com/home.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I was thinking of planning it for a JOC event during early October 2017. The weather during that time has been really favourable over the last few years but I can recall when it wasn't but we can't plan for that.

We are away to recce the route next week for 5 or 6 days to check out the accommodation and attractions en-route. Even from where we are in Argyll it is a good 3 or 4 hours north to the southern section of the route.

Have a think about it.

Looks good.
2017 would probably be ok as this year is a bit hectic.

Why as late in the year as October? It'll be a bit cold that far north by then won't it?

That looks fun, we would be interested in this. As Chris mentions, why as late as October? if it were during the summer holidays we could take the children as well to support the junior element within the club? If this comes off we could save a fortune in postage from regalia

Looks very good,,, would be nice to tour Scotland again

(But Please do not pick the route that takes in Thurso,, as the most exciting thing that happens there is the traffic lights changing :) )

Another supposedly great drive is around the north coast of Northern Ireland and down the Atlantic side. I've never done it but there is supposed to be great roads and some fantastic scenery.

No dates set in stone yet.

When I was planning the trip we had around Argyll and the Trossachs last year the Spring and Summer was very busy with other events. So very difficult not to clash with anything else. Even September is busy with events. That's why I thought first week of October before places start to shut and whilst the weather can still be good.

The other reason is that we then work seven days a week from Easter until October so no chance of me getting a week off.

If there is enough interest, I could organise it all, accommodation, road book etc. Organise it for the Summer or Spring but not come along with the group. I wouldn't mind that. I would be on the end of a phone if anything needed clarifying or sorting.

I'll drive the route next week and sort all of the details out from there.

What would be a good time of year for most folk?

It would be excellent to hold something within the Spring/summer seasons but it would be a huge shame if it was at the expense of the organiser not being able to take part, enjoy and revel in the credit. I will go with the flow on this, but I strongly think you should be able to come too! How about the October half-term week?

Thanks for the suggestion and planning Kevin. I’d be interested in one or both of the North Coast or Irish routes for next year. I agree with Kevin, the diary is full of other events till late September – first week in Oct would definitely be good for me for the N Coast, but I am flexible.

Great idea Kevin. We did the Cape Wrath run in early October and it was great. Empty roads (no camper vans or caravans), fantastic weather and beautiful scenery. What more could you want!
