Chris Walton's C-V8 III manual

Post by zacmarshall »

This is Chris Walton's CV-8 mark III. The car features along with his E-type on the Heritage stand at this weekends Practical Classics Restoration Show (at the NEC 28th and 29th March)
See http://www.necrestorationshow.com/ for more details of the show

The car leaving a recent International, note that it's not Chris at the wheel

Built in early 1965, this CV-8 Mk3 manual-drive experimental model JM/EXP/109 was entered into the Commander’s Cup 24-hour race at Snetterton where British racing legend Roy Salvadori was in the team that took the car to victory.

Despite its winning history, the car was believed to have been scrapped when it was purchased by Chris. When he saw the chassis number EXP 109, he knew it was something special, so contacted Jensen Parts & Service who were sure the car was disposed of many years ago.

From Chris' research it seems the car was abandoned in a corner of the factory before eventually being sold to an employee. He discovered it in a garage in the Wirral covered in dust with the bonnet lid melted where a light bulb had sat on it.

When Chris brought the car he had no idea of its racing pedigree, and with help from the club, he obtained pictures of the car featured in Jensen’s advertising as well as pictures from Salvadori’s win.

Helped by a friend, Chris rebuilt the engine and completely restored the car to an extremely high standard. It is now shown at Jensen Owners Club events in the UK and Europe

Just in case the C-V8 isn't eye catching enough Chris also owns this heather pink E-type.

Chris has known the car since it was two years old, for more details see the Heritage article here

So does anyone know what colour it is painted? In some photos it looks orange, in others it's more like Carmine (http://www.joc.org.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20283" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), I've not seen it in the metal...(I know, get myself to the NEC...!)

There's a 2-page feature on the Snetterton Commanders Cup entry with this car in issue 152 of the club magazine.

Roy Salvadore??!

Despite his name, Roy Salvadori was an Essex lad, born not far from where Mike Byrne lives.

There was a follow-up article in issue 154 of the club magazine, from Mike Jones.
He revealed that this was the third attempt by Jensen to finish the course in a C-V8.
I wonder what happened to the other 2 cars, as in 1963 & 1964 a C-V8 Mk III would not yet have been available.
The fuel tank was enlarged to 25 gallons and the car gave 7 mpg over the 1,900 mile course.
Previous attempts had been marred by wheel failures but this was fixed by increasing the steel gauge.
