133/5737

Post by Jean-P »

I posted some photos of this and its restoration in another subject but I think this will be more readable with a specific subject.

When I bought the car in june 2020 there were some issues that had to be solved. It did not pass the french technical control (equivalent to MOT) because of few points easy to solve:
- 2 worn tyres
- 1 broken seatbelt
- one out of order front light

These points were easy to solve and I had the registration done by mid august.

Some bad points with this car were:
- the brakes system was not working properly;
- some electrical gremlins
- engine tuning was needed
- there were some rusty points in some areas (mainly arround the de rear glass; at the bottom of the driver's door and, to my fear, at the bottom of the passenger rear wing) - beside this, the frame was solid and it was was nice looking at a distance of arround 2 meters
- the worst part was the trim with worn leather on the rear (maybe a dog played in the car) and a retrim of the front seats that was made with leatherette: A lot of job to come.

In july, the 3 first point were solved.
The car passed the French technical control late july and all the paperwork was done in August: the car was allowed to run on french roads but not safe enought for me!

first thing to do was the improve the brakes system (started in october 2020.
then I expected to take care of the trim and, finally of the bodywork
I has the servo and master cylinder replaced. It works better but not has well as I expected. I had a Series3 jaguar XJ with almost the same system and it was better: the pedal still seems too smooth .

Unfortunately, when the car was in the garage, my mechanic crashed the car...

not a big crash but quite serious indeed:

the strange thing is that the bonnet did not have any damages

lots of talks with my coachbuilder who did not want to undertake such work!

finally, the coach was repaired with all the mecanical parts in place!

Good news.

I like your front spoiler/air dam.

Is it integrated into the bodywork, or a screw-on? Any idea where it came from?

It was srewed on. I really have no idea of its origin but made with fiberglass and of very poor quality... as we say in France, nice from far away but very far from nice!

I bet this was an aftermarket spoiler. It has been removed when the coach was repaired

due to the crash, the schedule has to be changed...

coachbuilding was the first point to solve.

I had 2 options:
The first was to repair the crash , repaint the damaged area and wait before undertaking the rust issues.
The second was to take care of all the coach issues and respray the entire car.

Of course, I knew I would have to go for a complete respray within 10years, so I decided to have a complete different car!

the car originally came out of the factory in Brasilia colour with a black vinyl roof and a beige interior (reprayed in cream style years ago)

In order to solve the insurance problems, we started by reparing the front end then, the coach was repaired from front to back.

The good point was that the frame was in a very good shape.

There were some surprises.... there was an old crash on the front left side (some nice work for the coachbuilders!) not very well epaired: the front end was not straight at all . The front end extension bursted and had to be rebuilt ans of course the radiator had exploded!

under the bonnet, an anti-heating protection has been glued with a nice glossy silver finish!
