My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Hi All, I have had a good couple of weekends on the Jensen and have almost finished the mechanical work on the underside of the car from the engine to the back end. I have yet to fit the Fuel tank vent pipes and fuel line to tank sender hose connection, then the rest of the exhaust system and the back end can finally rest on its proper wheels. Front suspension hopefully should progress this weekend.

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Well I have nearly got my MK2 back on the ground! I have at last got the front suspension, steering and brakes on the car. I had read up on a number of other members pages on how they got their front suspension back together and I eventually opted to use an internal spring compressor to provide initial compression of the springs, then use 3/8” studs to take over the spring compression, removing the internal spring compressor and then pull up the spring pans on the 3/8” studs. Very time consuming but also very controllable and probably the safest way compared to many of the other ways that people have done this. I shall get the brakes bled this week and at last I can drop the old girl back to the floor.
Some more pictures of my progress.

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Absolutely stunning and such sterling work you're doing there Gav
I notice you've got the earlier type front top wishbone arms on there which are press steel, the slightly later Mk2's had the cast upper wishbones, I prefer the ones you have on your car. Are you putting Rostyles back on it Gav?.. Years ago when we liked all the later stuff and wanted the Mk3 Alloys on the Mk2's we would find they just touched these pressed wishbones so we used to run the grinder over them and take a few mm off, but seeing what you are doing and such beautiful work I presume your are going down the Rostyle route are you?.. If so what have you done with your Rostyles Gav.. Have you had them re-chromed?
Keep up the splendid work Mr Man..........

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Hi Grant, really sorry to disappoint you but it’s MK3 alloys which we’re on the car when I got it. However, they are now reconditioned with new centre caps/rubbers, wheel nuts and even J valve dust covers and do look fantastic.
Picture of car when I got her, she has come a long way!

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
So at last a momentous moment, being able to push the car out of the garage on its own wheels. The engine bay needs very little to finish it now; connect up the cooling fans, run the HT leads, make up and fit the gearbox oil cooler hoses from the radiator to the flexi pipes, fit the air cleaner and then all the lotions and potions. The wheels were all from Andy along with new wheel nuts and centre caps. I thought long and hard about the tyre options and eventually went with 215 65VR15 tyres that are 100 load rated. They are about 6mm smaller on rolling diameter than the ER70VR15 so speedo reading affected by about 0.6% which is insignificant as a variation of tyre pressure can generate that!
They are about 10mm fatter and I am pleased as I much prefer the look of bulging tyre wall as opposed to a flat side wall, more NASCAR!
Anyway, more should follow shortly as my attention moves onto bumpers, rear exhaust system and front side lights/indicators.

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
Hi All, since I last posted on my page, I have fitted the bumpers, grill, bonnet, side lights and rear exhaust system. I honestly expected a couple of weeks of evenings to get this done but the bumpers have been 5 weeks of on/off Agro to get them to where they are now.
Both bumpers were too wide and had to be reworked to fit the car. The conversion brackets to fit MK3 bumpers to a MK2 were a pain to make. The over riders and again the bumpers had to be reworked so the over riders were symmetrically set. The number plate light holes also had to be reworked to set this central to the bumper and both bumpers had to have their internal edges ground back to correctly and consistently gap with the body shell. A total pain! However the results speak for themselves and I am very happy with the look now. I have just offered up the stainless trims for the tailgate and can already see that that will be the next battle. I thought this was supposed to be fun!

Re: My Interceptor MK2 rebuild
I must admit your doing a sterling job and the attention to detail is superb.
Restoring a car like you have is fun with frustration thrown in.... but all this will pale into insignificance when you take it for a MOT then the filling station and you get more friends than you thought possible.
Looking forward to see the car in real.

Its looking lovely and its the attention to detail you are persevering with here that make all the difference to the finished car.

Thanks guys for all the moral support! Grants passion for the Marque and sense of humour make me laugh and help to keep me stay motivated when I have banged my head for the 19th time in an hour or had to repeatedly keep removing parts as I have got the order of assembly wrong.
Toby, your massive renovation photo diary of your superb Looking car has been really useful and I have referenced it many times when stuck on how something should go together or look.
I want to pay the car the respect it deserves. I know it will feel great to finally resurrect a car that has been off the road more than 30 years and with hind sight, probably should have been scrapped! But I have saved it and much credit has to go to everyone out there that has commented and helped in such a positive way.
Cheers all.

Hi Gav,
I'm glad you found my restoration blog useful, it also helped me achieve my agreed value insurance cover after supplying the link to the underwriter. Keep up the good work
