My first Jensen, hopefully many miles ahead of me

Post by monk1483 »

As to the history of the car, John Staddon has kindly furnished me with the following information;

Chassis Number 104/2313
Engine number 319/4V
Registration GLD 62C (so the registration has never changed)
Colour Princess Grey over Black
Interior Colour Grey
Ex-factory 23.07.1965

History

first owner 18.10.1965 Alick Dick, Royston Industries Ltd, 24 New Bond Street W1; also The Old Farm House, Hill Wooton, Warwickshire, till at least 1967
Rees C Perry, Little Braxted Hall, Witham. Essex
Michael Golder, 18 Medfield Street, London SW15
Larry D Williams, RAF Upper Heyford, Oxford
by 05.12.1971 J W E Jones, 26 Craneswater Park, Southsea, Hampshire PO4 ONT
by 08.1988 David Jones, Lutterworth, Leicestershire
04.2017 Kevin Monk

The 'by' before a date simply means the first recorded date that we know a new owner had the car, in the case of David Jones you have told me he actually bought it in 1972 so the history may be complete

Alick Dick, the first owner, was the former MD of Standard Triumph, he became MD in 1954 when he was only 37 years old and was known as the wonder boy of the British car manufacturing industry, he was ousted in 1961 after Standard Triumph was taken over by Leyland, but before that he was the man responsible for introducing the Triumph Herald. Royston Industries, the company he joined next, as MD, made 'Midas' a very early flight recording system, forerunner of the 'black boxes' fitted to aeroplanes today, but they went bust in 1968.

Many Thanks for your welcome.

Chris

Yes I still have my blue SP, I sold the red one I restored a couple of years ago.
This was an 'accidental' purchase as I actually went to view a part restored Daimler SP250. Although the SP was too much money for its current condition, I casually asked the vendor about his other classic car. This was the C-V8, to my surprise he said it was also for sale.

I bought the car that day and arranged delivery back to Cornwall.

Over the next few days I became a little worried about the purchase, as it had not had an MOT since 2014.
The car was mostly unmolested as the previous owner had been custodian since about 1972, but the paintwork is very flat and the interior needed a good clean.

I took the car for an MOT the day after it had been delivered and was shocked to find it passed with flying colours, with no advisories.

This week I've changed the water hoses, rewired the Otter switch and fitted a new air filter.

Just discovered today that the oil pressure pipe on the back of the gauge has been leaking, didn't have time to investigate further so will have to have a look on Thursday (when I'm next off work).

Hi Kev, That red SP250 restoration was a master class in car restorations.
I think you are among a very select few that have a plastic Daimler and a plastic Jensen!
I can think of 2 others; Josh (Jsabah in both clubs' forums) in the US has an SP250 and just bought a LHD C-V8 restoration project and another member from the Thames Valley area has both.

Good luck with the C-V8.

Chris

Thank you for your kind comments about the SP, I don't know if the restoration is still online.

The Jensen will not be a full restoration, but a rolling one (hopefully). When finished it should be a nice presentable car.

I also have a 1968 Scimitar Coupe (also GRP) that needs a total restoration, I've been gathering parts for some time now and was going to make a start at the end of this year. The Jensen however has put paid to that for another few years both for financial and space reasons.

Kind Regards

Kev

Welcome, Monkey! Just realised who you are. I spent a long time following your account of the red SP250 restoration, and marvelled at your workrate. I spent some time trying to find an account of the Reliant resto, but I see you have not yet started it.

A warning about your terminology: on this forum an SP is not a Daimler sports car but a particularly powerful Interceptor variant! You may cause a few puzzled looks if you start talking about an SP with hemi heads etc...

Hi Stephen

I'm afraid you have an advantage over me, I can't put your name to a face. :? what was your user name on the DLOC forum.

No, I have not started on the Reliant Coupe yet (now on hold a couple more years because of the Jensen), although I have been collecting spares for it so when I do start it should not take too long (famous last words).

I know nothing about C-V8's, mine was an impulsive purchase. One of the better decisions I've made.

Thanks for the tip about the SP, apparently it stands for Six Pack. Been out in the blue SP today, sorry Daimler Dart  Absolutely glorious, although now I've driven a C-V8 the Dart does not seem as quick as it once was.

Many thanks for the link to the Red SP restoration, I thought that had been lost in the ether. Although it was an amateur restoration I just wanted to share with people that you don't need lots of specialised tools to rebuild a Dart. Just a methodical approach and making sure you have sourced a majority of the parts (and the history) before you start.

Kev, I was just a lurker on the DLOC forum. Starting as an Interceptor lover, I graduated onto the glassfibre Jensen 541 which has a lot in common with the SP250, and perhaps the Reliant, hence my interest in the Daimler.

Ahh, that's why I could not place you. Hopefully we'll eventually meet at some Jensen venue or another.

Jensen has now had its re-spray and I've almost finished putting her back together.

Just in time for the first anniversary of my ownership. :D

Hope members will approve of the colour change.

Looks very nice. There's a couple of other Jensen owning members in your neck of the woods. Mark Rivron, Trevithick on this forum, has an SP and the first Jensen Healey to come out of the factory. He doesn't live very far from you up in Cambourne I believe and also Andy (Toby on this forum) lives quite close to Mark. Marks SP is the real deal, full on six-pack Jensen. You should try and make contact.
