Two Engine Questions:

1. I am running a Street Demon 1901 (625 CFM) carb, and a Air / Fuel guage in the cockpit. The guage usually runs right on the "Rich" side for all of the idle, and acceleration (mild to hard) driving phases. But when I back off the accelerator, I see the A/F meter drop down into the "Ideal" and sometimes the Lean" range.

I am not too concerned about this, as the engine is not under load at these times, but I wanted to see if anyone has this same experience, and is this expected behavior?

After doing more research - this sounds pretty normal. Fuel is cut, and therefor the AFR shows lean.

2. When I drive my car, and the motor is warmed up, and I shut off the engine, I get gurgling / boiling sounds from the motor, and you can feel bubbles being expelled through the hose from the block to the radiator. I am guessing the fluid in the heads is boiling, and the vapor is going to the radiator. Comments?

Rocky I have at some time had the same gurgling sound too but it was so long ago I have no idea about the cause/fix. I suggest when the car is cold take the cap off the radiator and ad coolant slowly until it is right at the top and stays there. This usually gets a good amount of additional coolant into the system and I have found this does help keep the temp more consistent. :)

Thanks, SC1

What I’m looking at doing in the relatively near term is a new water pump, replacing head gaskets, backflushing the block.

There is some discussion on the Monday Club that localized head hot spots can make the coolant boil in the heads.

Depends how long it has been since your engine was apart. Mine never has been except for new timing chain and oil pan clean out. The water pump will not affect the cooling unless the impeller is gone and I really doubt that it is. :)

On the contrary, the water pump can have a very big impact on cooling. There are many different aftermarket water pumps for the Mopar units and the performance varies quite widely. Some pump so little at engine idle speeds so as to be virtually ineffective, others tail off at higher engine speeds and don't pump enough. The original Chrysler designed unit was effective and if you still have that and it's working OK then I would suggest to stick with that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I believe I have the stock unit.

Appreciate the advice.

Head above the parapet here! :shock: but no-one seems to mention installing an electric water pump that is controlled by a 'delta controller' such as http://daviescraig.com.au/electric-water-pumps" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have the fans controlled this way. I would have thought that circulating the water after the engine was off, with the fans running in conjunction with an electric water pump, would disapate the heat and stop local area heat spots.

Rocky. I have gone with the push lock system and the corresponding plastic hose. My original hose turned a shade of tan. The flexible hose has its advantages. I have both elec pump for priming and mech pump for normal operation. I have a clear fuel filter first from the tank then a larger fuel filter plus another befor the mechanical pump. All hoses go through the frame holes and there is a rubber sheath around all hoses that can possibly rub a hole where in the plastic. I have taken the hard plastic stuff elec wires to encase them and coavered it with header heat wrap installed with vinyl top cement ( high temp ) the last hose is metal and goes around the distributor. The factory had heat wrap around this metal hose my system allows installation verses sliding it on first. I will send pics if you want. Racer Joe
