Congratulations Zac! Good to hear you avoided the Jensenlessness, must be really a really horrible condition  (I have been pretty much offline for a few months so only picking up on various events now.) I have only driven a C-V8 once many yars ago but from what I remember they are totally different animals from the FF. Not better or worse in the enjoyment departmemnt, just different. So I am dreaming about how my 541 V8 will be once finished (a long time from now :? ).

The fun and games with my C-V8 continues....

The car went up to Jim Smith at Stourport for work on the camshaft / timing gear but expecting to have to do more.

Just as well I expected more....

When Appleyards did the gearbox a couple of years ago they found a crack in the block which they got welded for me, unfortunately it has now cracked on the other side.
I've now found out that the engine isn't the original, Jim checked the date code and it is apparently a 1968 engine.

Duncan Watts has now supplied a used 383 engine which will be a better base for a rebuild.

To add insult to injury the left hand manifold has also cracked.

Has anyone got a left hand 383 manifold I can buy?

It's cracked...

Look on the bright side Zac its only a 5 minute job to replace that cracked manifold now the engine is out.

There is no right side manifold, they are equal on both sides.

Thanks for confirming what I thought...

When I spoke to a lady at one of the parts suppliers it made me doubt myself

Btw they are possible to weld unless the material has gone too thin. The trick is to heat the manifold to about IIRC 400C, weld, cool down over something like 48 hours.

The same on all Jensen with 383 Mopar engines. The 440 is different ( no angle at the downpipe side ) and the SP has a unique set of exhaust manifolds.

383 and 440 heads left and right are the same/interchangable, and so the manifolds can physically bolt on if you adjust down pipes etc. Interesting to know the SP has special manifolds! Interesting to note that your FF Per, had 440 Manifolds on it presumably for better flow, when Mike Grant took me for a ride in it. Mike didn't fit them, it must have been Andrew Cassar or the previous owner to him (Andrew imported it from the states I understand). I am thinking about SP manifolds on an FF now!

Not suggesting you pay anyone to repair the manifold when new ones are £400! However Ulric is getting cracked iron 541 heads welded. It is an interesting area, stresses, fatigue, repairs, and old iron. Some works teams used old high mileage engine blocks for racing as 1000s of miles and heat cycles in some cases seems to stress relieve them.

I have a brand new motorhome 440 centerdump manifold on a shelf. I think I paid 150 USD about 10 years ago. The only real difference is that the downpipe part is slightly longer so you would have to cut and reweld the flange on the downpipe.

This is the manifold on my SP. Never seen one with "cooling finns" before. But I doubt it flow significantly more than the other truck manifolds that Jensen used.

Got my C-V8 back yesterday from Jim Smith at Jims' autos after an engine rebuild. The block cracked on the other side to where it was welded a year or so ago so a replacement block was sourced and that served as the basis for the engine. Jim had some 906 heads which he had refurbished but not used so those went on the car along with an SP camshaft.

I took the car out for a short run to pick Sarah up from the pharmacy, the car is completely transformed and finally drives as a Jensen should. Lots of power and a very responsive engine. Can't wait to get out in it when we can travel again....

Jim used to work at Jensen Parts and Service, John Page (ex JP&S Service Manager) was there when the car was collected, the transport guy that picked it up for me was saying the John was impressed and said it sounded wonderful.

For anyone wanting mechanical work (or other stuff) I can heartily recommend Jim. Jim was recommended by quite a few people and I wasn't disappointed. Just wish I'd taken it to him when the gearbox went...

Jim's details can be found on his Facebook page:
