123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
The driveshaft needed to be shortened to fit. The measured length is 380mm.
If vibration is a problem GearVendors now have a short tailhousing which is substantially shorter. This option unfortunately was not available when I bought the unit 5 years ago.

Superheat,
No vibration in 9272 after the installation of the GVO with long tail shaft housing. I did need to install a polyurethane mount replacing the rubber unit on the transmission to stiffen things up a bit and prevent the GVO from gently touching the floor flange under hard acceleration around a corner (I didn't leave much space). You do need to pay attention to pinion angle, but with the offset diff pinion it isn't as critical as some vehicles I've monkeyed with! I was considering a CV joint on the trans side, but cost/size became an issue due to my power level

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
It has been a while since I last posted, but that is because I had not done much. I had a shoulder operation so was 6 weeks in a sling, and recovery took a lot longer than I anticipated. Then I have been distracted by trying to get fit for this summers (Southern Hemisphere summer) bike racing season.
Anyway here are the rear brakes with reconditioned calipers, new discs and Green Stuff pads. Hope they stop as well as the car will go! Coilovers are also fitted.

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
I have made some progress but have had too many distractions.
The exhaust has been posted in another topic, but it is a 2 1/2" system with Flowmasters and resonators at the rear, finished with 3" tips. I hope that the view from the rear is admired. I have sent the headers out for powder coating then will do the final fitting of the exhaust.
Two oil coolers have been placed in front of the engine with inline thermostats to allow for warming up.
The carburetor is a Carter 750 competition series. I trial fitted my original air cleaner and it seems to be too tall. A 440 engine has been fitted with an Edelbrock Performer manifold, so that will raise the height by 20mm or so, and I did notice that fitting new engine mounts raised the engine as well. I have an Edelbrock mini air cleaner and can possibly modify the original air cleaner but need to wait until the bonnet is fitted and do some proper measurements.
The seats and all leather was in quite good condition. I cleaned the leather but stopped when the colour started to come off. The leather was conditioned with an Aussie leather conditioner containing bees wax and eucalyptus oil. Leather is now soft and smells good!

I had the headers ceramic coated. They turned out better than I expected.
Not only will they reduce heat in the engine bay, prevent corrosion but they are very very shiny. The ceramic coating can be seen inside the headers too.
The exhaust system is shown here before the headers were coated.

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
Had a few distractions but some more work has been done.
The original air filter did not fit (clearance) so had to use an alternative. The engine is being filled with fluids to make sure nothing leaks and an auto electrician will complete the wiring harness installation so could fire up the engine by the end of the month.
My original windscreen washer bottle was lost so I bought one from a local auction site. It was a little dirty but a scrub and new belt and looks OK. The bottle is not in the correct place but it was easier to fit it near the radiator rather than by the battery. The washer is a Lucas Screenjet from a Triumph so it is period if not strictly from a Mk2 Interceptor (but correct me if I am wrong).

Trico for Landrover is fitted to MK2, but designed to fit on battery cover, Lucas 5SJ (MK1) designed to fit roughly where you have it and are available new as are the Trico ones.

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
Thanks for the links. I think that the Lucas 5SJ is what I have, but it is missing the pump motor cover.
A couple more images of progress.
The floor was reasonably clean with no rust so some sanding...
primer... .
and heat and sound insulation.
The insulation came in a width of 36" and was sold by the foot length. I have used 21 feet so far and need another 7 feet to finish off the boot area and rear scuttle. It was double layered on the driver and passenger footwells.

Motor cover not missing it's a generic replacement, the black unit is the original design.

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
The Lucas version looks just like that except not black, and I think it is probably correct for the bottle shown.
You'll not get that motor tucked inside the bakelite 5SJ case.
The motor is the WSB100 and I think it was sometimes known as the 10SJ - i.e a development of the 5SJ.

A couple of progress pictures.
I do like the Altissimo rear lights with the chrome. Very slight pitting still visible but you need to be pretty close to see.
It is earthquake season again so I put the old steel rear wheels back on. Keeping the new alloy Rostyle replicas out of harms way.

Denso tape wrapped around the cart springs. They were wire brushed and greased. I am sure that they will never look this clean again.

Most of the work is done. Off to the upholstery shop, fit the rear window, a final fiddle by my auto electrician and then the paint shop to fix the assorted minor chips and scratches.
All outsourced jobs so all I have to do is pay the $$$
The engine has been fired up and is a perfect petrol to noise generator. 452 cubic inches can make a lot of sound..

Re: 123 / 3660 Restoration restarted
Car looks awesome!! I have seen a few other Interceptor owners talking about rear coilovers. If the rear leaf springs are good there should be no need for an additional spring on the shock. That is what we used to do years ago on our beaters when the springs were shot. They were called Load Levelers. I get the desire for an adjustable shock but not getting the reasoning for the extra springs.
