Restoration of FF 119/133

Post by DPP »

Here we go again, following the completion of my last car I decided it would be fun  to start another restoration.

This project will be done at a much slower pace than the last car (at least 5 years) as I already have an Interceptor to use and want to have a bit of time off in between working on it.
It may also be a slow start as my plan was to finish a few jobs on the Interceptor and pull my daily driver off the road whilst I give it a good look over and carry out some rustproofing and general maintenance on it over winter.

The car appears to be better shape than I thought now that I have had it on the lift for a good inspection but I will wait until Geoff the Welder has given it a good look over and his opinion.
I will also need to remove the last of the underseal and cut the new sill covers off to fully inspect the chassis tubes for myself. This car is a stalled restoration and the car is mostly stripped which means inspection of the shell was easier but the downside is that as I didn't strip it myself I now have a pile of parts to sort through and parts have been damaged or gone missing over the years. The other problem is most of the work already carried out is to a poor standard and will need to be redone.

All of the important FF bits for the 4 wheel drive and anti lock brakes seem to be present and in a reusable condition and a couple of nice surprises were it is still fitted with selectorride rear shocks and had 4 new brake discs fitted.

Heres the car

Hi Dave,

Congratulations: looking forward to see any progress coming up!
Btw: Is this the car offered by Andrew Cassar?

Cheers

This is the Andrew Cassar car I think you are referring to, I found him a really nice guy to do business with everything was straightforward and I would have no problem dealing with him again.

I have now spent the weekend going through all the parts to see if anything is missing and to sort them out for storage so that I know what I have and where it is. This has given me a brief insight into the MK1 FF but I still have a lot to learn and am looking forward to the challenge this project will be.

I will be assisting Geoff the Welder with the bodywork and hopefully learning a bit about the biggest part of the last car that I had little to do with.

As predicted progress has been non existent until today. The first job is to finish stripping the car, especially bits that could be damaged when the cutting disc hits it.

So with a free day ahead of me the interior was stripped, I thought the MK1 interior is far simpler and better fitted than a MK111 so refitting should be much easier than last time. The more I look at the car and remove items the better it seems :D but there is still much to do and im looking forward to getting stuck in properly in a couple of months.

I have finally got started properly having spent the weekend stripping the final parts of the car that needed to be removed before welding could begin.

I then stripped the insulation from the floorpans and cleaned then from above and below to assess the extent of the rust, I was pleasantly surprised to find
extremely solid floorpans with only a small area requiring attention on the o/s. This damage was caused as there is a dirt trap directly underneath it which has allowed
moisture to become trapped.

I decided to cut the area back to solid metalwork, luckily the damage on the n/s is a lot less than this.

Looks like a great base for your magic Dave!
The interior shot looking to the centre of the dash really shows the offset for the transfer box, something you dont see when all the interior is in.
Is that a mark 2 rear bumper?

That's a result Dave, I see that the pressed in detail in the floorpans is all in good condition. It'll look "right" from below when on a ramp. I hate seeing cars with flat steel floors.

I think Jensen started using what would become the mark III front bumper on the later non UK mark IIs as the large centre piece looked a little odd with some non UK number plates. When the switch over to the later type was made I don't know - may be Richard Calver can comment?

From the British Steel brochure page = a flyer for a 1970 Interceptor II

I like the comment on the Interceptor II - the perfect auto :D

The photo showing the Mk111 bumper is a little confusing, I have now removed and sold it and the car will be having MK1 bumpers.

I don't know who was restoring the car but it hasn't been touched since 2001, and unfortunately the dealer who owned it at the time died
and as the car was in bits amongst other Jensen's a few wrong parts were put with this car when it was sold on to the next dealer.

Just by chance Geoff the Welder popped in for a brew and chat, so I have arranged for him to come in 1 day next week and start cutting
the sill covers and rear 1/4 panel off so that we can assess the extent of repairs needed and fully examine the chassis tubes.
