Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
Re: Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
The car is now known as 'the Growler', partly as it reminds me a little of this magnificent beast:

Re: Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
May be worth checking the instructions, I'm sure I read somewhere that MSD coils are supposed to be mounted vertically.C-V8 II 104/2146 CHJ 948B

Re: Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
It's always good to know why:
"The Blaster II coil is an 'oil filled' coil. Because of the way the coil is manufactured, we cannot possibly remove all the air from that coil as we seal it up, so therefore there is going to be a small 'air bubble' in that coil.
When you lay that coil horizontally, the air bubble rises to the top and could expose the windings of the coil to the housing possibly causing the coil to short out against the casing.
The coil, unless an MSD High vibration coil, PN 8222, should be mounted in a vertical position (straight up and down) and away from engine heat (either on the firewall or fender well)."

Re: Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
It 'recommends' vertical mounting, but doesn't mandate it. I may move it at a later stage if it plays up or if I have the time, but there's a school of thought that it'll be OK where it is for the time being. I know a lot of people swear by mounting it somewhere cooler, but I'm not aware of any hard facts on it, as opposed to opinions...

Re: naming it Growler.
I've always liked the description of a Shackleton as "10,000 loose rivets flying in close formation".
Does this apply to your car? (apart from the flying past of course!).

I'm running a blaster 3 on the SP in the original position and all is good, so horizontal is fine. A 6AL is a good buy as well.

I would like to point out that VRL was a quick car and I recon with a decent carb/manifold/headers/ exhaust and MSD system would give an SP something to chew on.

I strongly recommend mounting the blaster coil vertically. I had mine mounted on my intake in the original location/orientation. I was touring Northern California with a group of other Jensen owners. Since I'm the "mechanic" I always followed the pack to pick up stragglers. We stopped at a filling station and filled up, I waited for the others to leave and went to start 9272. A medium sized pop came from under the bonnet and no start occurred. I opened the bonnet to find a clear oil spew all over my motor and a blown apart MSD Blaster coil still in the mount. Sadly everyone had left, and most being from an "older" generation none of them had a cell phone that was turned on...As it was 118 degrees outside I couldn't even touch the car much less work on it. We pushed it next door which luckily happened to be a Marriot suites hotel... A few beers later and a long walk to the autoparts store fixed me and 9272. No one noticed we were gone until they reached their evening destination... Moral to the story: Mount the coil vertically (especially when driving under hot ambient conditions) and make sure your road partners have their cell phones on (and know how to use them...)

Re: Viral, the Interceptor (aka The Growler)
I've been spending loads of money on the old boy lately, but it's been largely spent on 'invisible' work (electrical tidying, removal of an old alarm, a new exhaust manifold to fix a bad crack). The interior lights now work as intended, the passenger window works again, and I've had an antiroll bar bush and suspension cup housing replaced due to wear.
On the cosmetic side of things, I got rid of the old black windscreen wipers and put on some nice chrome Tex ones:

After a bit of searching, I managed to get hold of some nice chrome mirrors to replace the black ones which were fitted when I got the car

As a little treat, I bought a nice new tax disc holder:
I got a genuine, correct old tax disc off FleaBay, scanned it, carefully removed the old info, printed it out, and added the details for my car:
