Re: CEA 1J Earls Court Motorshow Interceptor
Ed, I am sure I read somewhere on here you were looking for a manufacturer of the bulkhead heat insulation.. if so read this.. its from another thread >>>
As a base use 8mm Nitrile foam glued with "ALPHA High Heat Contact Adhesive" and overlaid with "Shieldtex 780"

Grant, thanks for that, the Sheildtex looks better than the stuff from Woollies, is thinner and cheaper!! Will buy this instead, and depending on what it looks like, may put it on top of the Hardura.

Nice one Grant. Looking at Toby’s car if it’s good enough for his it’s good enough for me. Will go with the Sheildex then.
Kev I didn’t really find out anything ground breaking. I did see the Hardura for sale, but my bay has none so I am not going to put any in.
Has I type this I am sitting in the engine bay and have just finished stripping the old heat sheil off. There is a foam layer underneath most areas of the heat sheild that is in good condition. I am not going to disturb this, it just seems like a bit of a pointless exercise if it is good nick. It will all be covered with the new heat sheild anyway.
I was looking around for a good engine bay paint. I will be using enamel on the engine itself but want something decent for the bay.
Talking to a few people everyone wants to sell you something different. I went to one stand and all he had was paints. I told him what I wanted to do. Paint over the old stone chip cream white in the bay. This guy said virtually all new paints were going to be not very resistant to modern fuel and brake fluid. The other paints he could recommend were good for on bare metal. The best he could recommend was two pack. So I will be going with a two pack satin black in the bay it’s self. With powder coated satin black brackets where necessary.

It's not easy is it Eddie, as you say everybody has their own thoughts and requirements. With painting your bay black over the cream, I would make sure whatever you do it with wont chip easily, as it will quite quickly look a real mess if the cream starts showing through with any slight knock with a spanner.
Good luck mate.

Progress is not to bad.
The stainless exhaust is at the polishers, and the cast headers are at Zircotec being ceramic coated.
Various bits have gone to be powder coated.
One of the UJs on the steering had excessive play, there was no felt spacer in the tube guide and the flexi coupling was shot. So replacements sourced.
Repainted steering parts with new bits. Stripped out heat sheild. Starting to get heat sheild cut and in. Some satin black two pack paint starting to go on.

You're going at 100mph Ed ... looking brilliant sport soon you'll be >> again
Ed.. I know you are and need to be more of a purist than me with the history of your car .. but you can get those flex steering couplings in Poly.. they will outlast those rubber ones as they're are right by the exhaust , if you want the poly ones here's the link >>> https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Poly-Uret ... 0948408203" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .. I have one on my Interceptor >>>

Coming along nicely Eddie, the engine bay sure does look better in satin rather than body colour.

Looking really nice Eddie, and you've managed it in a short time too.Wish I had the time at the moment to work on mine. All I've managed so far is clean most of the engine parts, haven't even started on the engine bay.

Re: CEA 1J Earls Court Motorshow Interceptor
Thanks for the info on the flexi coupling Grant. I remember the topic but have gone for the OEM black one.
Thanks for the comments Lawerence. I am really pleased I have gone for the black. Was just going to clean the cream up but Dunc came along and said go back to black, it got me thinking, best idea ever.
Kev, yes time is the killer. Luckily for me we are starting to slow down at work up until Christmas, but I bet you still have quite a bit on in December. I have stuck to an hour a night with a few more hours over weekends. I have bought an engine stand for the clean up of the V8, but not starting this until the bay is 100%. I actually think the engine will be a quicker job.
Some brass core plugs in the post from Mr Brooke’s. Also some sound advice from him. Thanks Andy.
I reakon I am about 50% done in the bay. Have some more nitrile foam on order to patch some bits up.

Bits are starting to come together now.
Hoping the engine bay will be complete this weekend.
Then onto the engine itself.
Picked the headers up today. Ceramic coated finished in Zircotecs performance grey. The ceramic coating should help with under bonnet heat. Just hope they don’t crack.
Rocker covers just cleaned and painted.

Looking good Ed .. Notice how the Mk2 rocker covers have the cut-off at the ends.. much easier to remove than the later ones that were fitted to the later Mk2's and Mk3s.. much easier to remove when you need to & the engine is in-place
I bet you're enjoying yourself doing this job aren't you Ed?.. Very satisfying everything you do when you are at this stage, have one of these "Me old Fruit-Bat">> Oh and give one to Kevin for me to when you see him please SteadyEddy, here you go, thanks Ed>>

To be honest Grant its ups and downs. Finished polishing the exhaust so on a massive high at the moment, which has bought be up from my massive downer when I found out I shouldn’t have taken the engine out with the torque converter fittedGrant wrote: I bet you're enjoying yourself doing this job aren't you Ed?.. My problem is I am not very mechanical minded, but I will give anything a go. This can be a bit of a lethal combination.
But I will say one thing, without this forum I probably wouldn’t have even contemplated doing this. The info available and the help and advice from people is invaluable.

Hi Edd. do not beat yourself up about pulling the mtr with the converter att, it has prob done no harm at all if it slid out real easy it will be fine,,Eddie wrote:To be honest Grant its ups and downs. Re: CEA 1J Earls Court Motorshow Interceptor
Hi Grant,
Not so much pulling it out, but trying to put it back in attached to the engine, can be tricky, as aligning everything up is really difficult. This can lead to the weight of the engine bearing down on the gearbox input shaft causing damage, but more easily if not aligned correctly buggering up the oil seal, and putting excessive strain on the flex plate.
As Grant said, don't beat yourself up Eddie, I've so far managed to break my wiper motor, and managed to let the ether out from my capillary water temperature gauge, by over heating it and the solder melting
That exhaust looks fab, with the other parts too, your definitely going for Gary's cup next year then
