CEA 1J Earls Court Motorshow Interceptor

Post by Eddie »

Hi,

I am the new proud owner of CEA 1J a MKII Interceptor used on the 1970 Jensen stand at the Earls Court Motorshow.

I am sure this car doesn't need to much of an introduction. When I started my search for an Interceptor I would browse this forum (Months before I joined) and new of the car from the previous owners posts.

Mark Rivron (Trevithick) has made numerous posts about CEA and the fantastic work he has done on her. Because of this when I came to view CEA I already had a good idea of what I was getting myself into.

I am now lucky enough to own CEA which in my view is a dream car.

The Motorshow connection is a big bonus for me as I work in the exhibition industry building the stands. I have spent many a late night watching various car manufactures preparing their latest models, sometimes having to pull the car from the stand at the eleventh hour because someone hadn't made the new bumper properly. There has been occasions when I have been asked for some double sided tape, self taping screws, washers etc,etc so the technician can get the new part to fit properly before the show opens. I believe the technical term is called "bodging it".

Now CEA is in my hands I intend to carry on Marks good work (and Matt who had the car from around June this year for a short time). I have already had some bits of trim out of the boot to neaten them up and ordered a (new old stock) rear view mirror from Martin Robey. It means I get to spend some quality time with her in the evening in my man cave (garage)

As I am learning at the moment it's more about me reading other people's posts, but as I start replacing and refurbishing various bits I may be of help to others.

Anyway here is a couple of pictures of the old girl.

I can hear Trevithick crying into his Cornish cream. just make sure that you use a wide angle lens from ground level in future, then he will recognise it.

A nice 50 mile round trip today in CEA.
I took in my local branch of Multicell (Battery specialist) where he checked my battery over. He gave me 3 readings from the battery,Volts, amps and another figure. I can't remember what the other figure was but my battery had around 5800, he said under 5000 and we could have a problem.

My new rear view mirror has arrived from Martin Robey. So it was a good excuse to strip the mount off and give the fabric around the mount a bit of attention and a good clean.

As you can see from the first image the old mirror is blackened around the edges.

The mirror mount didn't seem the most secure and when I took it of one of the brass nut certs was loose so that's now sorted and with a few new fixings I have a factory fresh new mirror and mounting.

You need a good rear view mirror in an Interceptor to watch the other cars get rapidly smaller 8)

A small thing that has been bugging me is how the carpet is fitted on CEA. It's not only my car but other Interceptors I looked at seemed to have carpet that wasn't quite right.

I only did the drivers side today but it was a good excuse to get the front seat out and give the leather on this side a good clean with some leather feed. With the seat out I was able to get to all the awkward places to clean. The trouble is I tend to take off bits of trim I can see and clean behind them as well. It's also gives me a chance to stick back bits of leather / vinyl that have curled up at the edges before I put them back. I was interested to see the panel down by the accelerator pedal with the sliding vent in is ply.

It's great to see just how solid this car is when I have various bits off, there really doesn't seem to be one bit of rot. But to be honest I am not expecting to find any.

The leather trim around the handbrake has seen it's day so that's on the list to be replaced.

The 2 bits of carpet that I removed came up like new when out of the car. I gave them a good steam as well to flaten them back out.

In my opion they have fitted back in a lot better that they came out.

The seats came up perfect as well. It gave me a chance to strip the sliding gear from the bottom of the seat clean up and re grease as well.

This car is pretty perfect as it is but I am one of those people that can buy a new car and start taking it to bits after a week.

I bought "Gold label hide food" from eBay.
There are other leather treatments that are twice the price but this seems to have performed well for me.
I went for the 1kg tub as this was the most cost effective way of buying it.

Cleaning the drives seat and half the rear seats has hardly used any of it either.

I put quite a lot on, left it to dry and then buffed it off with a clean cloth.

Another 50 mile drive out this weekend, which puts a smile on my face.
I treated CEA to a full tank of fuel.
The passenger side seats have now been striped out and cleaned and carpets refitted.
I am now onto the headlining. The X5 steam cleaner brings this up like new. I have stripped the chrome knuckles out of the sun visors as the chrome is flaking off.
I will drop them in tomorrow at the local polishers to get them re plated.
