A short film from when our neighbour asked us if he can try out his drone, up on the Klausenpass. A bit choppy some of the sequences:

Back from a road trip down to Genova and Cinque Terra. Lovely region, well worth it if you have the chance. First road trip in the C-V8 with my wife (who is- or was, before the trip- not quite as fond of the car as I am. But the car could not have behaved any better). The only other classic cars we saw were Fiat Pandas, dozens of them. A big thank you to him who looks after the C-V8 for us.

I got a message yesterday from Hartmut Jungnickel that there was an article in the Spiegel magazine on Axel Thorer (one of the previous owners of the C-V8) meeting Idi Amin in 1975:

Using Google translate:

The photo was taken in 1975, in the residence of Idi Amin, in the hills over Kampala, the capital of Uganda. At the time, Amin was not considered for nothing a blood lusting dictator. He was sitting in a drawing room, vice versa his ministers, and I was allowed as a journalist for a drink and a few questions. I had met him years before when he was still a private, in the service of her Queen's Majesty. The atmosphere in the palace could be described as nice, nice like the smile of a black mamba. I believed to be able to allow myself a provocation. I held a matchbox from Kenya up to Amin and said: »H. E.«, which means »His Excellency«- good acquaintances called him by that: »All over Uganda there is not a single match! Even in the poorest Mzungu countries you can buy one without hesitation. But not from you, and if people would stand in long lines."

That was correct, matches were in Amin's Empire not to be found, as if they weren't yet invented. Mzungu is a mocking in Swahili word for us "palefaces".

Amin didn't like criticism at all. He just had an insubordinate author, the British Denis Hills, scheduled for execution for alleged espionage and sedition (Hills called Idi Amin a »black Nero« and »village tyrant« and was later, after intervention from the Queen, expelled). When asked about the matches, Amin made a wicked face, pointed a huge index finger at me and growled, 'My mzungu friend. if in your country there are people waiting for buses, does that mean that there are no buses in Germany? You see, that's how it is with matches in Uganda." I asked, obviously out of my mind, whether there is a single match here in his residence. He looked surprised around and yelled: "Fimbo!" Which means match in Swahili.

But nothing happened. There were none to be found. Whereupon a fierce discussion with the Economics Minister began, which ended with Amin slapping his Minister and sending him down to Kampala to get matches.

I stayed in Amin's residence all afternoon, but the minister did not return.

I have found a John Gardner who was involved in greyhound racing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=5H1B2BfA0VA

He was born 1946, got involved actively in racing with 24/25 (1970). He says that early on he had a dog named Empty Words- he had a "very very beautiful Swedish girlfriend", and it was a phrase that she used...
Thorer's response is that this John Gardner may have been the son of the owner of the C-V8
