541S Push-open air knob

Post by Frankoid »

I am after a push open air knob for my 541. Does anyone know where I can get one or if it fits another car?

It looks very much like a 1950s VW Beetle wiper knob, readily available from various suppliers. Not sure if it is the same size. The thread is 3mm.

Close, but no cigar! Better than nothing though.

I am not sure of the thread, posibly 2BA? Is this another unique and interesting part fitted to the Jensen 541?

I've always wondered why Jensen chose an ivory Hella switch for the overdrive on many 541s. Very German, and not matching the black Lucas equipment in any way.

I have been scouring the internet looking for images of the push-open air knob, its a Smiths heater control knob, and I can only find them on Jensen 541S images (but may be BMC also).. And they all seem to have the paint worn off. The lower picture has a ball inplace of the knob. They have the INT end knobs that I cant find anywhere else either :? But these are standard Lucas hex fit with painted INT ends . 1st pic 1121. Note the ivory Hella, a helluva switch.

Maybe these push-open air knobs are a candidate for 3D printing if the genuine articles are unobtainable

The 541S heater controls / panel are cut from the Austin Healey parts. This would give you new writing and a fan on / off knob with writing, as below. It is a shame that the knobs either side are not similar to the knob which is the subject of this thread.

Out of interest, did they cut out the relevant part or just poke it through a hole in the dash so only part of it showed? And is the chrome surround hand crafted?

On my car, the ends are hacksawed off. The “chromed “ surround is painted black, or as in one of the photos above, polished mild steel with traces of red oxide primer left behind!

Both 1083 and 1121 have "sawn off" heater controls so thats what Jensens must have done! The ""Push-Open Air"" knob presumably was Smiths parts bin (the seller said it was a NOS Smiths heater control knob) but it took me most of my adult life to find one. Where autojumbles failed the internet triumphed, simple things often reward exponentially etc 8) .. In 1121 the controls still have the original writing, on 1083 its mainly worn off. The "INT" knob Jensen painted Lucas? Pictured is 1121, now resplendent with new "Push-Open Air" knob :D
