My link was to the Cropredy advert. Stu picked up the later Silverstone ad on the same carandclassic website which features a different picture. I suspect the Cropredy ad will disappear soon as the auction will charge for a withdrawal...

Interesting that Cropredy have one really nice picture of the car, no verbage, with fog lights, and the missing wheel centre in place. It doesn't look fake or unduly expensive the way they present it compared to other adverts on C&C.

What a coincidence! my first Jensen was advertised in multiple places, including CBG  Still on the hunt for a better car, no luck so far. Our latest muse is an ex Earls Court Show Car, ex Jensen Museum (no, the other, TW one  ). Very original as they say...
Hi John, hope you're keeping well, 119/006 sends its best!

I know this car and have seen it in the metal recently. The description on the auction site is poor but the car is decent enough, it is pretty original and quite solid but really needs some love (largely cosmetic) and use, its been part of a pretty special collection of Jensnes and as a result has hardly been out of storage in years. If you asked me how it compares to other FFs sold at auction in recent times I'd say its down on the rather lovely Tangerine one but up on most and an enthusiatic amateur could do most of what needs doing at a low cost, its got solid tubes and has had new sills in the past and it started and ran well; the Maxaret was in place last time i saw the car.

The biggest weakness from what i saw was the engine bay which could be alot better presented but as we both know that is generally cheap and easy to do.

At least it does now have an MOT..the servo problem and corrosion having been sorted out apparently.

Most of the issues with this one come from lack of use, from memory its done 300 miles in 8 years and not much in the decade before that, they just dont like sitting around for years doing nothing. It needs someone to love it and use it. If i were the seller I'd have tidied the engine bay and put some miles into it first. Its not a bad car, its just a bit underloved and needs some use.....I personally hope it ends up with a knowledgable member who can turn it from good to excellent easily enough.

Bidding started at £60k with what looked like a commission bid and stalled completely at £65k. Not sold along with at least 50 others in this 130 vehicle sale. Post sale deals may improve the dismal outcome.

The auctioneers have to take some blame for the overall poor showing in my view. When the market is a bit tough accurate descriptions are needed to inspire confidence. Prices are not shooting up rapidly, and if you are not happy with a purchase you most likely will take a hit if you flip it.

What do you think it is rightfully worth in today’s market with the shortfalls noted?

Could the bad description have cost up to £10k in a weak market?

It is a bad market after one where FFs were getting £95k.

Difficult times. Well the cheapest FF at the moment is a brown Mk2 on CarcandClassic, classifieds £77.5k and restored by Cropredy we are told. Looks very nice.

I personally know of two FF's which sold a few years ago for £100+ each and one which sold for £130,000
Not "asking prices" but actually sold.

Much depends on the car as ever Martin. In September 2021, an excellent by all accounts, it looked mind blowing to me, an FFII in Mango sold for £110,400 inc premium. I think someone got a very good deal there. Another FFII sold this year for £52,000, another excellent deal for the buyer, possibly poor presentation of the car contributed, with buyers wanting a more standard look, although they seem to overlook MK3 alloys on FFIIs. Back in 2019, 2 smart looking FFs fetched £70K each fairly close together, less than a year later, after what I guessed as £20K of work, mainly cosmetic, one of those two 70K cars sold for £90K.

Would that £110,000 FF make the same money today? I think there would be a long queue at £90k, there has been nothing like that quality since. It might fetch £110k again, it might fetch more. FF 249 apparently went for £80K this year, being auctioned a few times and seemed to hit the £80K mark repeatedly until the sellers accepted that. 249 was available and not selling for years, including the period when the mango FFII made £110,400 incl.

There is a wide price range there from 52K to 100K+. I don't think these cars we see failing to sell for big money at auction are in that 100K+ league so yes i agree with you there Martin.

Glenmarch.com is a useful web site to view classic car auction results. The accompanying graph capturing the range of prices.

Bear in mind some results are a few years ago (when it was a sellers market) and many of the cars are either not as good in the flesh as the photos suggest, or the owner is seeking a quick no hassle sale. Neither of which is likely to secure top dollar in most instances….and in my opinion distorts the market for those quality examples out there.

Interesting to see some of the cars subsequently flipped by dealers. A Volvo was bought for circa £900, then dropped like a hot potato and put back into a subsequent auction (it’s very rusty underneath) selling for £775. Currently with a dealer for sale as a project at twice the price..
