The convertible needs a repaint and has bubbles here and there. It is not economic to hand it off to be stripped, to and properly repair the body, repaint, reassemble and sell at auction at a profit. DIY it has to be.

If ever there was a car easy to DIY it is the Beetle. No lead loading, mass production, body lifts off and panels unbolt. The Beetle is even $42K ahead from day 1. Hagarty has the 1957 Beetle at a staggering $118K concourse, $36000 average condition. No idea how they justify that but they have that when I log on! 3/4 of the Beetle is there and hopefully original. Seats, dash, engine casings, axle, front beam axle, doors etc.

There are very few parts to a Beetle. Many 1950s NOS parts are very cheap still because most parts are still available from VW classic parts, or still made by VW or specialists. They made 60,000+ in 1957!!! The car is currently £1k, and the number plate is worth more than that.

I have difficulty believing what I have written above, however I have seen that a nice kit car on a sorted Beetle chassis sells for less than a Beetle these days!

So the VW auction has been cut short. It was around £1000 at the time, which already represents a 20 fold profit on the £50 the ebayer paid for it. All he did to it was pull it out of a hedge! Bargain.

In the video they state that a total of 1.5 million of these oval rear window Beetles were made. There surely must be more of those left in the world than the entire number of Jensens ever built. Difficult to imagine the concourse condition value of $100k plus. Perhaps that price reflects the extreme number of similar good condition cars owned by fanatics that you compete against and must beat, literally 1000s upon 1000s, to be a true concourse quality example. Original paint, original interior just for starters, this car can never be at that level.
