FF 232 coming to "the Market" auction soon

Post by Peter Rothery »

After a long time for sale with Classicmobilia FF 232 is due to be auctioned soon. Est at £75k to £85k...a considerable drop from the forecourt price.

Just for the record, the blurb from the Classicmobilia website says:

OWNERSHIP HISTORY To the best our knowledge and as has been passed on to the current owner the total mileage of the vehicle is as follows:- First owner: Confirmed registered 11.4.1970 in Bradford UK. Original Reg Number OKW 669H and registered as White to John Clunies Ross who lived at various addresses in Wentworth, Surrey, then of 36, Little Boltons, London SW10 and finally at Wellingroe in Lincolnshire until 1979. 2nd Owner: from 15th September 1983. Mr Neil Fairhead of 17 Lindisfarne Priory, Bedford. This owner then took the car to the USA where he lived in Washington. Extensive works were done including a ‘Level 1 Paint Job’ by Jensen specialist K and D Enterprises together with a full engine rebuild. We have a file of receipts and repair bills from USA and when it returned to the UK, back to Mr Fairhead’s Lincolnshire address as above and then on to Caversham, Reading, Berkshire. Mr Fairhead then moved back to the USA and decided not to ship the car out there for a second time and that was when the vehicle was sold. Mr Fairhead owned and cherished the car for 30 years and it would appear used extensively until 2005 when the mileage started to reduce to ‘occasional use’. The car was sold on 12th June 2013. 3rd Owner: Mr Ian Warrener of, London and is a close friend of the current owner. After a very enjoyable ‘run out in the country’ in one of Ians cars, this up together but in need of some improvements underneath, Jensen. Mr Banks agreed to buy the car leaving the period of ownership very short for Mr Warrener. 4th and current owner: from 6th February 2014 to date. Mr Stephen Banks, East Grinstead, West Sussex. Current. Mileage: 78,800. 12/6/2017 78,253 20/7/2015 78,126 10/6/2013 77,899 17/5/2010 77,599 28/9/2009 77,061 16/4/2008 76,972 27/10/2005 76,389 details to follow.

Ian Warrener is the Bristol owning brother of Barrie, of this Forum.

Remind me please oif the "forecourt" price. Tis a lovely car and good to see some class on the market. There was a S3 on the market for 145K recently discussed at length on these pages....was at a dealers. Did it sell? Many thought overpriced but I thought this is just the advertising we need. Kenny38

The dealer always quotes "POA" but reportedly only £105K back in December 2019. I'm sure it was tested by a car mag at some point but can't find any ref at the moment.

This comment isn't going to help: " Its only real journey in some time being to The Market’s HQ when it drove well but in the last miles through a snow storm the diff began to make a noise, likely due to the extreme cold affecting the oil." Hmm

Interesting mod to the front roll bar links. Not sure if that is beneficial upgrade or not.

Kenny38 - put the sherry down - I fully appreciate your mission to promote the marque and big-up the prices for decent examples but I am really sorry that this one does fall short in many areas for anyone being asked to spend a substantial amount of cash. Make your own mind up about the Mk3 switches, lack of air con and even trivia like a missing fuse box cover, incorrect bonnet seal, hot rod tyres and the lashed up washer bottle etc. I don't, however, expect to see a temporary exhaust repair like this on a £75k to £85k car particularly as the dealer has held on to it for a few years and had plenty of time to ponder fixing some of these issues. Time to check out the "noisey diff" if that really is the issue.....

So you want top dollar for a car and the front and rear tires don't match? And two of them are raised letters? OMG! Such an easy thing to fix. :)

Which of the 3 diffs were they talking about I wonder? Unlikely to be affected by cold I would say, especially at the end of a drive. Sounds like it needs proper attention. A more straightforward explanation would be a problem with the recently rebuilt rear axle needing to be redone though they could be referring to any of the other diffs. That front antiroll bar looks dangerously close to the steering gear. Early cars didn't have one and drive well enough so would be safer to remove it until it can be properly rectified. Will be interesting to see what it fetches compared to the other FFs on offer as there is more choice recently.

I would put money on the problem being the front prop shaft centre bearing giving up and/or the cotton reel rubber bushes supporting it. Partial failure makes it sound like the world has come to and end....complete failure can smash the bell housing area with a flailing shaft. Difficult to see upon inspection but not indicative of the sort of loving care that is being "sold" via the auction BS.

Auction end time extended to 25th April as "new" paperwork has emerged.....which looks more inspiring than the 50 year old build sheets and warranty claims etc previously published. Nothing to do with the max bid only reaching £47k and reserve not being met as yet I am sure.

They have also updated their narrative to go with it: "the Jensen Interceptor was designed by Touring of Italy and used a GRP body, originally made in Italy by Vignale"

Auctioned closed at £65k "reserve close"...which considering the £5k+ that needs to be spent makes it strong money in today's market.
