541 R 3674319 at Bonhams auction
Re: 541 R 3674319 at Bonhams auction
In my mind I have a recollection of an article or forum post by Norman, about a trip to Italy to buy a 541, and it turned out that when he got the car home the car had been improperly restored in Italy to such an extent that the chassis was rebuilt significantly out on one side or something, so basically needed "doing again". Plus it has now lost its original interior, when the original was probably still serviceable or repairable It will never get that back. Presumably the chassis can be easily corrected, body off and a few chops of the surgeons knife.
It is a very nice car and yes I would like it, but not for the reserve it will have, if it is in fact the car I was reading about. I think the 541 Jens had trouble selling for someone else was a real stunner and a bargain. Still it took a while I guess.

We did little more than appraise the car and sort the odd safety critical issue after the car landed in the UK.
John's account of the cars restoration in Italy is more or less correct and it was stored with us for a while waiting for a slot for us to address its issues. Sadly Norman died before we ever started work. Our final act was to transport it to the Chateau Impney where it was sold in the H&H Auction on behalf of Norman's estate.
Not to put too finer point on it, I definitely would not want to be credited with having restored the car.

A lot less surface (storage) rust than before - someone's given it a clean up.
"Now that chassis number is particularly interesting ‘cos it’s the one after the one before, which is the one after mine, not many people know that"
