Half an SP...

Post by mch »

I'm not sure why anyone would want to buy this rusty half-shell... Does anyone know the history of SEW722K ?

Selling for spares or art but includes V5 so you can make your own SP.

Shame it was cut like that looks like it was in far better condition than the Interceptor I’m currently restoring.
All I could find on it is below. Either an interesting engine or a mistake on the DVLA records

Personally, I think this is a bit of a strange one.

I have no knowledge of the car or the seller but having come from many many years on the BMW e30 scene, lots of rusted out ‘part cars’ with documents that showed they were an M3, used to appear and change hands for very good money even though they were beyond any form of economical repair.

The documents showing the car that rolled out the garage once the ‘restoration’ (loosely use term for a bit of work rearranging the letters and digits on the cars chassis stamp) had finished, it was therefore an e30 M3.
Obviously that quadrupled the value or more.

It’s a bit like President Washington’ Axe (re-handled and re-headed 17 times, but does that still make it the original axe?)
or Trigger’s broom if Only Fools and Horses is more your thing :D

Just doesn’t seem right........ :?

I have been to that seller's yard, as have others here. Definitely not wall art in my view. He has advertised some of Andrew Cassar's cars before. He was selling a nice looking SP for normal SP money. A manual Mk3 CV8, and a Mk1 Interceptor spring to mind. You could ask the seller if interested. The bulkhead might be knocking around mixed up with some axles or other parts? Knowing it might have been one of Andrew's cars might help with tracking down the original engine.

Curious that this 131 series car which would have had a "H" series engine fitted has "J" badges on the 1/4 panels. Maybe a retro-fit...or it may not be an SP at all? Just a thought... Dead men tell no tales!

At least HPI does not list the car as written off or scrapped....yet.

Thanks Johnw. As I said, I have no knowledge of the seller and I don’t want to cast dispersions on what he’s doing. He’s been absolutely on front about it when you read the advert. And it’s good to hear that it’s from a genuine business sale.

Man buys a car, man sells a car.
Whatever he buys it for and sells it for and whatever profit he makes are his business and absolutely none of mine or anybody else’s.

He is clearly not trying to pass it off for something it isn’t, he’s just stated the facts in the advert.

It’s just the fact that because it’s an SP which is quite a premium over your standard interceptor if it falls into unscrupulous hands who knows what will get wheeled out the garage.

Having said all that, I wish to seller the best luck with the sale.
If I found something like that at the back of my garden and found out it was an SP I think I’d be very pleased. :D

Thats funny Peter. I thought exactly the same! The part that is left I believe has no chassis stamps at all.

I wonder if a Jensen111 badge has the same fixing centres as a JensenSP badge if you see what i mean.

Hmm...I can't see any badge fixing holes on this one. I was also trying to figure out if this car has always been blue. It seems to have been a lighter colour at some stage judging by the window apertures and under the vinyl roof?

If it isn't the real deal, what happened to the real one? At least the Jensen community will be alert to the questionable provenance of any vehicle bearing this chassis number in future. Buyer beware.

The doors are on a car in Germany and the bonnet is on a car in Australia. The DVLA says it was last taxed in 1977. The JOC knew of it as a member's car in 1995. The timeline and parts dispersion are consistent with a car which was off the road for a long time and eventually broken. I don't think there is anything odd about it except the carpet is black when I would have expected blue. The badge mounting holes at the rear have been filled in so I assume it was repainted. The J-badge is a later addition. I assume the carpet fragments do not have a number on the back. The chassis number should be on the chassis tube and would be the final arbiter.

Here’s something odd.

Someone on FB has posted two photos which look very much

like the front section!

He bought it years ago just for the front panel.

The cuts and colours are a good match.

It’s from a Mk3 that was white when new and resprayed a metallic blue.

The ‘half’ SP does look like it’s white beneath the metallic blue!

Chassis number is present on crossmember & engine bay plate!
