1973 MK3 Interceptor Barn Find Value???

Post by Spence1969 »

Hi, I have a 73 MkIII Jensen Interceptor that has sat in the garage since 1981. Its only done 12,000 miles and needs to go to an enthusiast who will restore it and use it!

What do you think a fair value in its current state is or should I restore and sell? Restoration is likely to cost me a lot of money, I am not sure how much but has to be at least £15k.

Many thanks

Any chance of either the reg or chassis number?

Has it been started while in storage or just sat there?

Difficult to appraise without more photos ...

Is the original paint intact? I can see a minor dent on the front wing, are there others?
I expect people would like to see closeup pictures of the wheel arches, and edge of the back hatch, as these usually rust first. It looks very straight and crisp in the photos we have here.

The bonnet has discoloured otherwise all original paint is intact. That minor dent is the only one and arches etc showing no rust. My father ran it for a few yrs (76-81) but as I say its only got 12,199 miles!

From those pictures that car looks better than probably 90% of the cars out there. Definitely all the original parts and looks like 12,000 mikes for sure. I do not see any rust issues anywhere. Interior looks new under the dust. That is a car that stays the way it is. Do not restore it. It's only original once! Perfect body/shut lines there. A keeper for sure. That engine will most likely start right up after some prep work. :)

What an absolute gem. Virtually impossible to find another example like it. This car should command much interest and hopefully value at auction. I'm not suggesting you should sell it via auction, but I would ask you to take your time before you accept an offer. Perhaps keep your bottom line to yourself. Hold a viewing day, accept sealed bids. See how the offers compare - and marry them up with the impressions you have of each bidder. If the results don't feel right, hang on to it or broaden your selling strategy.

I'd personal message those on the forum who's opinion chimes with yours. Perhaps give them a call to chat through their thoughts on the car's value/costs/desirability etc. There's a new Interceptor Registrar called Neil Bennett. I'm sure he would also offer an opinion.

Good luck!

That could be the holy grail a genuine low mileage car that has been stored well.

You would be best pushing the car out into daylight and taking lots of good quality photos form all angles. This may seem like a chore but the car could be worth a good chunk of cash if it is seen to be in good unmolested condition.
If it has not run for many years do not try to start it without some checks first, but it would be worth checking the engine is not siezed by turning it manually at the crank not on the starter motor.

Could also be worth contacting your local area rep for some advise to find it value before rushing to accept a low offer.

Hi SpencerImage.. That car is what all of us "Interceptor" crank pots dream of finding..You can see it has never been got at..Do not sell that in Hurry Harry!!.. You think it about it long and hard and get the best offer over a good few months maybe even a year.. if I were you I wouldn't even consider selling it(unless it's to me of course!!Image)..It really is a Gem, as sad as it may look to you because it filthy dirty and the chrome may have gone south, but.. it is something really special & you just cannot find them like that.. I have only ever seen one like it before and I have been around these cars since the 80's..take all the time to get the best offer you can or better still.. keep it and cherish it and slowly get it fixed up..it really is a museum piece SpencerImage.. With my kind regards to you.. Grant

recommission it and drive it i say.
on the face of it your looking at 3-5 k to make it road worthy just as long as it was fault and rot free when parked up.
enjoy it :D

A no-paint-needed dents removal service should make short work of that dent without needing a respray. Make sure you get personal recommendation, and that they are used to working with the thicker metal of older cars.

You could stick it on Ebay with a detailed description and a high reserve, this would give you an idea of a price someone is prepared to pay as it stands, also be prepared for a thousand & one questions 95% of them would be probably timewasters and dreamers.

Another option contact one of the Jensen Sales services consider a commision sale?

This would look good as it as is exhibited on the Jensen Stand at the NEC 2021 pending Covid-19

Best of luck whatever you decide.
