Hi all,

I was recently approached in my capacity as the Joint JOC Southern Area rep to advise on the sale of a barn (actually garage) find SP which has been off the road sitting in the same garage since 1988. It probably comes as no surprise that the car was taken off the road due to carburetor issues.

The car has a current log book/V5C and is on SORN. I have not seen any of the paper work. The vehicle VIN number is 138-8426 and the engine number HC-10889 (could anyone please post details of the car from the Calver’s Chassis book). The car was registered in April 2014. The current owner has owned the car since the late 1970’s.

I visited yesterday to take the attached photos to take some photos and talk to the owner about possible selling options (trade, auction, internet etc). We agreed to offer the car initially through the club to hopefully find somebody with a genuine Jensen interest who would be willing to take on a full restoration to bring this rare car back to its former glory rather than sell on the car quickly.

Firstly, the good points. This looks to me a very original car and may still be in its original paint. For a car that has sat in a single metal garage for 30 years the interior is in a surprisingly good condition. The leather will renovate very easily and the headlining and dash are in great condition. The boot interior is in also I good condition. A tool bag is present but no tools and the original jack is present in its original bag.

The bodywork above the waistline has stood the test of time quite well. The vinyl roof shows no obvious bubbling, but has lifted slightly along the gutter line. The bonnet shows surface rust and paint cracking. The upper parts of the rear quarters shows only minor surface rust and were easily revived on site with T-cut. The rear boot lid shows corrosion in all the usual places including the hinges. The B-posts look really solid and the door shut lines are exceptional. There is no vertical movement on the door when lifted and they make a lovely clunk when closed. Door skins look in reasonable condition.

It is below the waistline is where the car has really suffered with extensive severe corrosion . The lower half of the car will require a complete restoration. The rear end, which faced a partially open door, shows severe corrosion. The lower part of the valance is very frilly. The rear offside part of the bumper has eroded away. The sills are completely shot with the outer sill completely absent. All four wheel arches show severe corrosion. As the car could not be moved (flat tire and possible seized brakes?) I was unable to inspect under the car but would expect it to be severely attacked by rust.

We were unable to open the bonnet and can make no comment on the state of the engine or the under bonnet area (one photo of the anti roll bar area shown).
The owner says the car still has the six-pack (I found “two barrels” in the boot) and the orange air filter box is reportedly present.

The owner will try to get hold of some dollies to allow the car to be removed from the garage. I have provided a couple of articles from the Southern Area Tips and Techniques Manual (https://www.joc.org.uk/magazines/tech-tips) on how to open the bonnet from below or via the drivers side vent (any other advice on how to open would be very welcome).

The owner (who is now in his early 80’s) would like a quick sale (of course at the right price). If the car does not sell through this post then we shall probably explore the auction route.

Anyone genuinely interested in potentially buying the car should register there interest by sending me a “pm”. I shall then have an open day when all interested parties can attend a viewing and inspection of the car (hopefully moveable and with the bonnet open). At this point interested parties will be able to make a offer, most probably by sealed bid. The owner will retain the right to accept or decline the highest bid.

Obviously given the state of the car this is a very hard project to value. I have suggested a price range to the owner.

What do people think the reasonable price for the car?

I shall provide answers to any further questions that I can via this post or by pm.

I couldn't agree more, and then they still want top dollar! Yes, it'll be worth good money when completed, but that should be the restorers premium for taking on such a complex rebuild. I bet like many more he will have an unrealistic price in mind (which is why it's there now I'll bet) and it will still be there in another 20 years.
So sad for the car, poor SP.

But you are right - he is for sure looking for more than the 3000 pounds that it is worth.

A huge job for some heroic member. This car am sure was already rusty when the owner "stored" it. A home job would cost 1K in hours am sure. Final price if....if.....in top shape would not on current prices be worth the effort. I think if car is parted it would only have interiour of value plus glass and maybe rear hatch. Engine has to be seized by now but may have some small value. I reckon 2-3K and store for next 10 years.If I lived there I would try to buy it and deliver to Grant for free pills. Kenny38 8)

And also......This is typical of what i have been saying about cars creeping out from under tarps plus "barns". Most should go to crusher after any viable bits taken orf. Do you really wonder just why etypes and AM's are such a price? They would never be on market in that condition. We do stuff up our values when this sort of car is advertised. Tell the old git to burn it. kenny38 8)

If you read some of the posts it makes you think twice about putting a car up for sale on this forum...

I know what you mean. I had to persuade the owner to offer the SP to the Jensen community rather than going straight to auction in the hope a genuine Jensen enthusiast would have the chance to buy the car at a reasonable price. Next time I'll advise them to go straight to auction!

Hi Felixx.Thankyou for info. However on looking through the AM's only on offer i did note that many if not most were unfinished restos. Not much rust shown. Amazing prices :shock: I very much doubt whether he will get what he is looking for at auction. If some one offers to cart it away, he should take the offer. Make space for the next one. Kenny38 :D
