C-V8 Mk 111 For Sale

Post by John Staddon »

Sent to me by Simon who has just bought 2435

From the latest edition of Classic Car Buyer

"CV8 Mark III
1966, £12,000. Metallic green. Requires restoration.
Bill for Jensen Works recon. Engine fitted in 1992.
Includes desirable registration number 600CV.
West Midlands, 01217 042 357"

This is 112/2404, the last dated record of the car goes back to 1980, though there are a couple of undated names after that and Richard Calver told me he was last aware of the car in 2006.

At one point in the 1970s the then owner asked in the JOC magazine if this was the fastest C-V8 in the country, though the ad suggests it has lost the engine fitted back then.

I am told it is a serious restoration project and there are some (poor) photos with the ad but I haven't popped out to buy Classic Car Buyer yet to see what it looks like.

Paul McElhinney went to have a look at this car. It's actually 60 OCV and not 600 CV. Interior and engine bay "very presentable", well stored in Paul's view but what could be seen of the chassis is rotten, drivers side floor pan 'hanging' and a hole in the side beam you can get your hand through. The car has an interesting early history; at some point in the early 1970s it was over bored by 30 thou (tax disc says 6466 cc which may be a mistake or that might be the capacity once over bored, I'm sure someone can work it out), Inskendarian cam fitted, 3 x 2 barrel Holley carb fitted, front suspension converted to Koni telescopic dampers, bonnet 'spike' removed (or knocked off, there is an invoice in the chassis file for a new bonnet frame and lock box which suggests damage), oil temperature sensor and guage fitted, said to do 0-60 mph in sub 5 seconds. There is also correspondence between JML and the then owner about dropping the rear axle ratio, but nothing to say that was ever done, if it was it would help explain the 0-60 mph claim. Paul says the performance carb' has gone and it isn't actually clear from the ad whether the factory recon engine is the original or a replacement (in which case all the performance mods would have gone). Paul rates it as a project. There might also be a photo soon, once Paul has worked out how to forward it from his iPhone. Car is in Solihull.

Thanks Paul, this is the first photo I've ever seen of this car, I see it is 60 0CV - except it isn't, I've checked on the DVLA website and it is 60 OCV. Using a zero when it should be an 'Oh' is a bit naughty.

Regards

John

Edit: I've just been told the engine is a replacement but with zero miles on it, but it hasn't been run for a long time (don't know how long that is).

OCV registration from Cornwall dates from May 1962 onwards.

60 OCV is a replacement number, it was originally NPD 4D and the first owner lived in Cranleigh, there is nothing in the history that would link an owner to OCV so no way of knowing why the number changed or when it changed, some time after 1976, but that is as close as I can get.

Speaking of Cornwall, he's been very quiet of late. Ever since he bought that ex-army truck I think....

I'm trying to ignore this CV8 as I need another project like a hole in the head, plus I'm spending a few quid starting another company at present.
But I could buy it an park it up for a bit I suppose ?

Anton hi

I still have 2435. Just treated it to fine fettling of the brakes.

Would be delighted to hear from you if you have the original instruction manual of 2435.

Kind regards

Simon
