1973 mk111 for auction.

Post by Manwithaplan »

To be auctioned in Poole at the end on July. Estimate seems a little low.

What the story? Seems a tidy car. There was a dot box went for 10k 2 weeks ago so not sure where this price comes from although I'm sure there is a reason!

Looking the way the passenger door fits or should I say does not fit and the shape of some of those panels there is a lot of filler in that car? Also the interior looks freshly painted. The car might be OK but with the description I suspect that will be another for Roman to sort.

Why the Wolfrace alloys? The standard wheels are plentiful and those tyres look like something you would put on a van not a 120 +mph car.

My guess is as the description sais its a start of a restoration rather than a car that has been recently restored and we know how much that can cost.

I don't know how many times (but a lot) Colin Holley of CH Autos has said to me 'this one came in for a repaint and when we took the paint off it needed everything doing' ( inner and outer rear valance, front valance, arches, doors, tailgate, sills etc etc).

So be careful and get it checked out by someone who knows - especially if you're on a tight budget.

I've no idea what this car needs - it may be sound for all I know.

Best wishes.

thanks Stuart, I suppose if the work has been done to a good standard by Colin then it might be a positive rather than a negative, I expect the estimate sale price is way off what it will go for if it's up together, luckily the auction place is only a couple of miles from me so I can report back. to be honest I prefer the interiors of the MK1 and 2 but there seems to be a big disparity in value of up together examples so a Mk III seems (to my novice eyes) to be the model with enough headroom in the value to allow for a proper job to be done on the repaint, re chrome and mechanics.

If Colin had done the work on this car we wouldn't be having this conversation, what was being suggested is that even a nice looking car can be a money pit as the rust is well hidden under shiny paint.

Looks like the radiator grill needs to be taken apart and reassembled with the plates in the correct order.

You'll know all about that Shaun!

The leaves look to be less than true to their original state, how you would get them flat again would be a challenge and a half.

Just get new ones cut once you've established the profile.
That's easy compared to replacing sheet metal panels.

No car you buy will be without faults Andy, unless you pay top money, and even then there will be certain items in need of tlc. what you need is a good body and chassis, and an interior that can be saved, poor paint is a minor detail in the greater scheme of things, mechanical's can be rebuilt.
You have one opinion that this car was assessed and considered to be in need of panel work, unless someone has done the body properly in the past or it's a very well kept and stored original just about every car you look at will have something wrong, this is where we are within the market, prices have risen making a proper job just about viable on a personal not commercial level, with care you can get your money back, your time? that's gone forever.

Taximan talks sense, i do not think you will now buy an interceptor,,,,,,, sub 30k that will be perfect needing no work, they always need work, I think you will get a nice running driving car but probably very tatty etc,,,,i would dearly love to go look at a 30-40k jensen to see what you are actually getting for your money now prices have risen,,,,, but i wont as i class that as tire kicking and wasting everyones time,,,,

OJO will make a good car but you will have to throw pretty big money at it i reckon,,,,,
