Not sure if you have fixed this problem , but I would say it’s a choke problem rather than advance problem, if you try to give it more fuel and the choke is not working or fully closed it will miss /splutter even stall .How do I know this ? my car hasn’t got a choke fitted and does the same as yours...

I have a drivers side (r/h drive) down pipe for sale £50 in good condition, still fitted to my car so I know that
If anybody wants it I’ll get the tools out .

If the MK1 uses a carrier to hold the seal have a good look at the bolts and use the right socket , you do not want to round off the heads of these bolts .

First colour I saw in my head was Red , but thinking of a tool came out with Blue spanner...mmmmm not sure if that counts for any type of % I must just be weired .

If you have no luck with the themostat , it might be worth checking your engine oil level hasn't increased indicating a head gasket or possible crack problem .

I have just done mine, they had been diamond cut and lacquered but were looking tatty. I found the lacquer came off with a sharp paint scraper very easily, I then used wet and dry paper grades from 400-1200 and finished off with a stiff buffer and brown bar.
